|
13 |
And their brethren, heads of the house of their fathers, a thousand and seven hundred and threescore; very able men for the work of the service of the house of God. |
The priests, who were heads of families, numbered 1,760. They were able men, responsible for ministering in the house of God. |
|
14 |
And of the Levites; Shemaiah the son of Hasshub, the son of Azrikam, the son of Hashabiah, of the sons of Merari; |
Of the Levites: Shemaiah son of Hasshub, the son of Azrikam, the son of Hashabiah, a Merarite; |
|
15 |
And Bakbakkar, Heresh, and Galal, and Mattaniah the son of Micah, the son of Zichri, the son of Asaph; |

|
17 |
And the porters were, Shallum, and Akkub, and Talmon, and Ahiman, and their brethren: Shallum was the chief; |

|
18 |
Who hitherto waited in the king's gate eastward: they were porters in the companies of the children of Levi. |
being stationed at the King's Gate on the east, up to the present time. These were the gatekeepers belonging to the camp of the Levites. |
|
19 |
And Shallum the son of Kore, the son of Ebiasaph, the son of Korah, and his brethren, of the house of his father, the Korahites, were over the work of the service, keepers of the gates of the tabernacle: and their fathers, being over the host of the LORD, were keepers of the entry. |
Shallum son of Kore, the son of Ebiasaph, the son of Korah, and his fellow gatekeepers from his family (the Korahites) were responsible for guarding the thresholds of the Tent just as their fathers had been responsible for guarding the entrance to the dwelling of the LORD. |
|
20 |
And Phinehas the son of Eleazar was the ruler over them in time past, and the LORD was with him. |
In earlier times Phinehas son of Eleazar was in charge of the gatekeepers, and the LORD was with him. |
|
21 |
And Zechariah the son of Meshelemiah was porter of the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. |
Zechariah son of Meshelemiah was the gatekeeper at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. |
|
22 |
All these which were chosen to be porters in the gates were two hundred and twelve. These were reckoned by their genealogy in their villages, whom David and Samuel the seer did ordain in their set office. |
Altogether, those chosen to be gatekeepers at the thresholds numbered 212. They were registered by genealogy in their villages. The gatekeepers had been assigned to their positions of trust by David and Samuel the seer. |
|
23 |
So they and their children had the oversight of the gates of the house of the LORD, namely, the house of the tabernacle, by wards. |
They and their descendants were in charge of guarding the gates of the house of the LORD--the house called the Tent. |
|
24 |
In four quarters were the porters, toward the east, west, north, and south. |
The gatekeepers were on the four sides: east, west, north and south. |
|
25 |
And their brethren, which were in their villages, were to come after seven days from time to time with them. |
Their brothers in their villages had to come from time to time and share their duties for seven-day periods. |
|
26 |
For these Levites, the four chief porters, were in their set office, and were over the chambers and treasuries of the house of God. |
But the four principal gatekeepers, who were Levites, were entrusted with the responsibility for the rooms and treasuries in the house of God. |
|
27 |
And they lodged round about the house of God, because the charge was upon them, and the opening thereof every morning pertained to them. |
They would spend the night stationed around the house of God, because they had to guard it; and they had charge of the key for opening it each morning. |
|
28 |
And certain of them had the charge of the ministering vessels, that they should bring them in and out by tale. |
Some of them were in charge of the articles used in the temple service; they counted them when they were brought in and when they were taken out. |
|
29 |
Some of them also were appointed to oversee the vessels, and all the instruments of the sanctuary, and the fine flour, and the wine, and the oil, and the frankincense, and the spices. |
Others were assigned to take care of the furnishings and all the other articles of the sanctuary, as well as the flour and wine, and the oil, incense and spices. |
|
30 |
And some of the sons of the priests made the ointment of the spices. |
But some of the priests took care of mixing the spices. |
|
31 |
And Mattithiah, one of the Levites, who was the firstborn of Shallum the Korahite, had the set office over the things that were made in the pans. |
A Levite named Mattithiah, the firstborn son of Shallum the Korahite, was entrusted with the responsibility for baking the offering bread. |
|
32 |
And other of their brethren, of the sons of the Kohathites, were over the shewbread, to prepare it every sabbath. |
Some of their Kohathite brothers were in charge of preparing for every Sabbath the bread set out on the table. |
|
33 |
And these are the singers, chief of the fathers of the Levites, who remaining in the chambers were free: for they were employed in that work day and night. |
Those who were musicians, heads of Levite families, stayed in the rooms of the temple and were exempt from other duties because they were responsible for the work day and night. |
|
34 |
These chief fathers of the Levites were chief throughout their generations; these dwelt at Jerusalem. |

1 |
Then all Israel gathered themselves to David unto Hebron, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh. |
All Israel came together to David at Hebron and said, "We are your own flesh and blood. |
|
2 |
And moreover in time past, even when Saul was king, thou wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the LORD thy God said unto thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be ruler over my people Israel. |
In the past, even while Saul was king, you were the one who led Israel on their military campaigns. And the LORD your God said to you, `You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will become their ruler.'" |
|
3 |
Therefore came all the elders of Israel to the king to Hebron; and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the LORD; and they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD by Samuel. |
When all the elders of Israel had come to King David at Hebron, he made a compact with them at Hebron before the LORD, and they anointed David king over Israel, as the LORD had promised through Samuel. |
|
4 |
And David and all Israel went to Jerusalem, which is Jebus; where the Jebusites were, the inhabitants of the land. |
David and all the Israelites marched to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus). The Jebusites who lived there |
|
5 |
And the inhabitants of Jebus said to David, Thou shalt not come hither. Nevertheless David took the castle of Zion, which is the city of David. |
said to David, "You will not get in here." Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion, the City of David. |
|
6 |
And David said, Whosoever smiteth the Jebusites first shall be chief and captain. So Joab the son of Zeruiah went first up, and was chief. |
David had said, "Whoever leads the attack on the Jebusites will become commander-in-chief." Joab son of Zeruiah went up first, and so he received the command. |
|
7 |
And David dwelt in the castle; therefore they called it the city of David. |
David then took up residence in the fortress, and so it was called the City of David. |
|
8 |
And he built the city round about, even from Millo round about: and Joab repaired the rest of the city. |
He built up the city around it, from the supporting terraces to the surrounding wall, while Joab restored the rest of the city. |
|
9 |
So David waxed greater and greater: for the LORD of hosts was with him. |
And David became more and more powerful, because the LORD Almighty was with him. |
|
10 |
These also are the chief of the mighty men whom David had, who strengthened themselves with him in his kingdom, and with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel. |
These were the chiefs of David's mighty men--they, together with all Israel, gave his kingship strong support to extend it over the whole land, as the LORD had promised-- |
|
11 |
And this is the number of the mighty men whom David had; Jashobeam, an Hachmonite, the chief of the captains: he lifted up his spear against three hundred slain by him at one time. |
this is the list of David's mighty men: Jashobeam, a Hacmonite, was chief of the officers ; he raised his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed in one encounter. |
|
12 |
And after him was Eleazar the son of Dodo, the Ahohite, who was one of the three mighties. |
Next to him was Eleazar son of Dodai the Ahohite, one of the three mighty men. |
|
13 |
He was with David at Pasdammim, and there the Philistines were gathered together to battle, where was a parcel of ground full of barley; and the people fled from before the Philistines. |
He was with David at Pas Dammim when the Philistines gathered there for battle. At a place where there was a field full of barley, the troops fled from the Philistines. |
|
14 |
And they set themselves in the midst of that parcel, and delivered it, and slew the Philistines; and the LORD saved them by a great deliverance. |
But they took their stand in the middle of the field. They defended it and struck the Philistines down, and the LORD brought about a great victory. |
|
15 |
Now three of the thirty captains went down to the rock to David, into the cave of Adullam; and the host of the Philistines encamped in the valley of Rephaim. |
Three of the thirty chiefs came down to David to the rock at the cave of Adullam, while a band of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim. |
|
16 |
And David was then in the hold, and the Philistines' garrison was then at Bethlehem. |
At that time David was in the stronghold, and the Philistine garrison was at Bethlehem. |
|
17 |
And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem, that is at the gate! |
David longed for water and said, "Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!" |
|
18 |
And the three brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: but David would not drink of it, but poured it out to the LORD. |
So the Three broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem and carried it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out before the LORD. |
|
19 |
And said, My God forbid it me, that I should do this thing: shall I drink the blood of these men that have put their lives in jeopardy? for with the jeopardy of their lives they brought it. Therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mightiest. |
"God forbid that I should do this!" he said. "Should I drink the blood of these men who went at the risk of their lives?" Because they risked their lives to bring it back, David would not drink it. Such were the exploits of the three mighty men. |
|
20 |
And Abishai the brother of Joab, he was chief of the three: for lifting up his spear against three hundred, he slew them, and had a name among the three. |
Abishai the brother of Joab was chief of the Three. He raised his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed, and so he became as famous as the Three. |
|
21 |
Of the three, he was more honourable than the two; for he was their captain: howbeit he attained not to the first three. |
He was doubly honored above the Three and became their commander, even though he was not included among them. |
|
22 |
Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man of Kabzeel, who had done many acts; he slew two lionlike men of Moab: also he went down and slew a lion in a pit in a snowy day. |
Benaiah son of Jehoiada was a valiant fighter from Kabzeel, who performed great exploits. He struck down two of Moab's best men. He also went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion. |
|
23 |
And he slew an Egyptian, a man of great stature, five cubits high; and in the Egyptian's hand was a spear like a weaver's beam; and he went down to him with a staff, and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian's hand, and slew him with his own spear. |
And he struck down an Egyptian who was seven and a half feet tall. Although the Egyptian had a spear like a weaver's rod in his hand, Benaiah went against him with a club. He snatched the spear from the Egyptian's hand and killed him with his own spear. |
|
24 |
These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and had the name among the three mighties. |
Such were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoiada; he too was as famous as the three mighty men. |
|
25 |
Behold, he was honourable among the thirty, but attained not to the first three: and David set him over his guard. |
He was held in greater honor than any of the Thirty, but he was not included among the Three. And David put him in charge of his bodyguard. |
|
26 |

16 |
And there came of the children of Benjamin and Judah to the hold unto David. |
Other Benjamites and some men from Judah also came to David in his stronghold. |
|
17 |
And David went out to meet them, and answered and said unto them, If ye be come peaceably unto me to help me, mine heart shall be knit unto you: but if ye be come to betray me to mine enemies, seeing there is no wrong in mine hands, the God of our fathers look thereon, and rebuke it. |
David went out to meet them and said to them, "If you have come to me in peace, to help me, I am ready to have you unite with me. But if you have come to betray me to my enemies when my hands are free from violence, may the God of our fathers see it and judge you." |
|
18 |
Then the spirit came upon Amasai, who was chief of the captains, and he said, Thine are we, David, and on thy side, thou son of Jesse: peace, peace be unto thee, and peace be to thine helpers; for thy God helpeth thee. Then David received them, and made them captains of the band. |
Then the Spirit came upon Amasai, chief of the Thirty, and he said: "We are yours, O David! We are with you, O son of Jesse! Success, success to you, and success to those who help you, for your God will help you." So David received them and made them leaders of his raiding bands. |

men of half the tribe of Manasseh, designated by name to come and make David king--18,000; |
|
32 |
And of the children of Issachar, which were men that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do; the heads of them were two hundred; and all their brethren were at their commandment. |
men of Issachar, who understood the times and knew what Israel should do--200 chiefs, with all their relatives under their command; |
|
33 |
Of Zebulun, such as went forth to battle, expert in war, with all instruments of war, fifty thousand, which could keep rank: they were not of double heart. |
men of Zebulun, experienced soldiers prepared for battle with every type of weapon, to help David with undivided loyalty--50,000; |
|
34 |
And of Naphtali a thousand captains, and with them with shield and spear thirty and seven thousand. |
men of Naphtali--1,000 officers, together with 37,000 men carrying shields and spears; |
|
35 |
And of the Danites expert in war twenty and eight thousand and six hundred. |
men of Dan, ready for battle--28,600; |
|
36 |
And of Asher, such as went forth to battle, expert in war, forty thousand. |
men of Asher, experienced soldiers prepared for battle--40,000; |
|
37 |
And on the other side of Jordan, of the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and of the half tribe of Manasseh, with all manner of instruments of war for the battle, an hundred and twenty thousand. |
and from east of the Jordan, men of Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh, armed with every type of weapon--120,000. |
|
38 |
All these men of war, that could keep rank, came with a perfect heart to Hebron, to make David king over all Israel: and all the rest also of Israel were of one heart to make David king. |
All these were fighting men who volunteered to serve in the ranks. They came to Hebron fully determined to make David king over all Israel. All the rest of the Israelites were also of one mind to make David king. |
|
39 |
And there they were with David three days, eating and drinking: for their brethren had prepared for them. |
The men spent three days there with David, eating and drinking, for their families had supplied provisions for them. |
|
40 |
Moreover they that were nigh them, even unto Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali, brought bread on asses, and on camels, and on mules, and on oxen, and meat, meal, cakes of figs, and bunches of raisins, and wine, and oil, and oxen, and sheep abundantly: for there was joy in Israel. |
Also, their neighbors from as far away as Issachar, Zebulun and Naphtali came bringing food on donkeys, camels, mules and oxen. There were plentiful supplies of flour, fig cakes, raisin cakes, wine, oil, cattle and sheep, for there was joy in Israel. |

1 |
And David made him houses in the city of David, and prepared a place for the ark of God, and pitched for it a tent. |
After David had constructed buildings for himself in the City of David, he prepared a place for the ark of God and pitched a tent for it. |
|
2 |
Then David said, None ought to carry the ark of God but the Levites: for them hath the LORD chosen to carry the ark of God, and to minister unto him for ever. |
Then David said, "No one but the Levites may carry the ark of God, because the LORD chose them to carry the ark of the LORD and to minister before him forever." |
|
3 |
And David gathered all Israel together to Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the LORD unto his place, which he had prepared for it. |
David assembled all Israel in Jerusalem to bring up the ark of the LORD to the place he had prepared for it. |
|
4 |
And David assembled the children of Aaron, and the Levites: |
He called together the descendants of Aaron and the Levites: |
|
5 |
Of the sons of Kohath; Uriel the chief, and his brethren an hundred and twenty: |
From the descendants of Kohath, Uriel the leader and 120 relatives; |
|
6 |
Of the sons of Merari; Asaiah the chief, and his brethren two hundred and twenty: |
from the descendants of Merari, Asaiah the leader and 220 relatives; |
|
7 |
Of the sons of Gershom; Joel the chief and his brethren an hundred and thirty: |
from the descendants of Gershon, Joel the leader and 130 relatives; |
|
8 |
Of the sons of Elizaphan; Shemaiah the chief, and his brethren two hundred: |
from the descendants of Elizaphan, Shemaiah the leader and 200 relatives; |
|
9 |
Of the sons of Hebron; Eliel the chief, and his brethren fourscore: |
from the descendants of Hebron, Eliel the leader and 80 relatives; |
|
10 |
Of the sons of Uzziel; Amminadab the chief, and his brethren an hundred and twelve. |
from the descendants of Uzziel, Amminadab the leader and 112 relatives. |
|
11 |
And David called for Zadok and Abiathar the priests, and for the Levites, for Uriel, Asaiah, and Joel, Shemaiah, and Eliel, and Amminadab, |
Then David summoned Zadok and Abiathar the priests, and Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel and Amminadab the Levites. |
|
12 |
And said unto them, Ye are the chief of the fathers of the Levites: sanctify yourselves, both ye and your brethren, that ye may bring up the ark of the LORD God of Israel unto the place that I have prepared for it. |
He said to them, "You are the heads of the Levitical families; you and your fellow Levites are to consecrate yourselves and bring up the ark of the LORD, the God of Israel, to the place I have prepared for it. |
|
13 |
For because ye did it not at the first, the LORD our God made a breach upon us, for that we sought him not after the due order. |
It was because you, the Levites, did not bring it up the first time that the LORD our God broke out in anger against us. We did not inquire of him about how to do it in the prescribed way." |
|
14 |
So the priests and the Levites sanctified themselves to bring up the ark of the LORD God of Israel. |
So the priests and Levites consecrated themselves in order to bring up the ark of the LORD, the God of Israel. |
|
15 |
And the children of the Levites bare the ark of God upon their shoulders with the staves thereon, as Moses commanded according to the word of the LORD. |
And the Levites carried the ark of God with the poles on their shoulders, as Moses had commanded in accordance with the word of the LORD. |
|
16 |
And David spake to the chief of the Levites to appoint their brethren to be the singers with instruments of musick, psalteries and harps and cymbals, sounding, by lifting up the voice with joy. |
David told the leaders of the Levites to appoint their brothers as singers to sing joyful songs, accompanied by musical instruments: lyres, harps and cymbals. |
|
17 |
So the Levites appointed Heman the son of Joel; and of his brethren, Asaph the son of Berechiah; and of the sons of Merari their brethren, Ethan the son of Kushaiah; |
So the Levites appointed Heman son of Joel; from his brothers, Asaph son of Berekiah; and from their brothers the Merarites, Ethan son of Kushaiah; |
|
18 |
And with them their brethren of the second degree, Zechariah, Ben, and Jaaziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, Eliab, and Benaiah, and Maaseiah, and Mattithiah, and Elipheleh, and Mikneiah, and Obededom, and Jeiel, the porters. |
and with them their brothers next in rank: Zechariah, Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-Edom and Jeiel, the gatekeepers. |
|
19 |
So the singers, Heman, Asaph, and Ethan, were appointed to sound with cymbals of brass; |
The musicians Heman, Asaph and Ethan were to sound the bronze cymbals; |
|
20 |
And Zechariah, and Aziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, and Eliab, and Maaseiah, and Benaiah, with psalteries on Alamoth; |
Zechariah, Aziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah and Benaiah were to play the lyres according to |
|
21 |
And Mattithiah, and Elipheleh, and Mikneiah, and Obededom, and Jeiel, and Azaziah, with harps on the Sheminith to excel. |
and Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-Edom, Jeiel and Azaziah were to play the harps, directing according to |
|
22 |
And Chenaniah, chief of the Levites, was for song: he instructed about the song, because he was skilful. |
Kenaniah the head Levite was in charge of the singing; that was his responsibility because he was skillful at it. |
|
23 |
And Berechiah and Elkanah were doorkeepers for the ark. |
Berekiah and Elkanah were to be doorkeepers for the ark. |
|
24 |
And Shebaniah, and Jehoshaphat, and Nethaneel, and Amasai, and Zechariah, and Benaiah, and Eliezer, the priests, did blow with the trumpets before the ark of God: and Obededom and Jehiah were doorkeepers for the ark. |
Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah and Eliezer the priests were to blow trumpets before the ark of God. Obed-Edom and Jehiah were also to be doorkeepers for the ark. |
|
25 |
So David, and the elders of Israel, and the captains over thousands, went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of the house of Obededom with joy. |
So David and the elders of Israel and the commanders of units of a thousand went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD from the house of Obed-Edom, with rejoicing. |
|
26 |
And it came to pass, when God helped the Levites that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, that they offered seven bullocks and seven rams. |
Because God had helped the Levites who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD, seven bulls and seven rams were sacrificed. |
|
27 |
And David was clothed with a robe of fine linen, and all the Levites that bare the ark, and the singers, and Chenaniah the master of the song with the singers: David also had upon him an ephod of linen. |
Now David was clothed in a robe of fine linen, as were all the Levites who were carrying the ark, and as were the singers, and Kenaniah, who was in charge of the singing of the choirs. David also wore a linen ephod. |
|
28 |
Thus all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the LORD with shouting, and with sound of the cornet, and with trumpets, and with cymbals, making a noise with psalteries and harps. |
So all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the LORD with shouts, with the sounding of rams' horns and trumpets, and of cymbals, and the playing of lyres and harps. |
|
29 |
And it came to pass, as the ark of the covenant of the LORD came to the city of David, that Michal, the daughter of Saul looking out at a window saw king David dancing and playing: and she despised him in her heart. |
As the ark of the covenant of the LORD was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David dancing and celebrating, she despised him in her heart. |

So they brought the ark of God, and set it in the midst of the tent that David had pitched for it: and they offered burnt sacrifices and peace offerings before God. |
They brought the ark of God and set it inside the tent that David had pitched for it, and they presented burnt offerings and fellowship offerings before God. |
|
2 |
And when David had made an end of offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD. |
After David had finished sacrificing the burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD. |
|
3 |
And he dealt to every one of Israel, both man and woman, to every one a loaf of bread, and a good piece of flesh, and a flagon of wine. |
Then he gave a loaf of bread, a cake of dates and a cake of raisins to each Israelite man and woman. |
|
4 |
And he appointed certain of the Levites to minister before the ark of the LORD, and to record, and to thank and praise the LORD God of Israel: |
He appointed some of the Levites to minister before the ark of the LORD, to make petition, to give thanks, and to praise the LORD, the God of Israel: |
|
5 |
Asaph the chief, and next to him Zechariah, Jeiel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Mattithiah, and Eliab, and Benaiah, and Obededom: and Jeiel with psalteries and with harps; but Asaph made a sound with cymbals; |
Asaph was the chief, Zechariah second, then Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-Edom and Jeiel. They were to play the lyres and harps, Asaph was to sound the cymbals, |
|
6 |
Benaiah also and Jahaziel the priests with trumpets continually before the ark of the covenant of God. |
and Benaiah and Jahaziel the priests were to blow the trumpets regularly before the ark of the covenant of God. |
|
7 |
Then on that day David delivered first this psalm to thank the LORD into the hand of Asaph and his brethren. |
That day David first committed to Asaph and his associates this psalm of thanks to the LORD: |
|
8 |
Give thanks unto the LORD, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people. |
Give thanks to the LORD, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done. |
|
9 |
Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him, talk ye of all his wondrous works. |
Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts. |
|
10 |
Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the LORD. |
Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice. |
|
11 |
Seek the LORD and his strength, seek his face continually. |
Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always. |
|
12 |
Remember his marvellous works that he hath done, his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth; |
Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced, |
|
13 |
O ye seed of Israel his servant, ye children of Jacob, his chosen ones. |
O descendants of Israel his servant, O sons of Jacob, his chosen ones. |
|
14 |
He is the LORD our God; his judgments are in all the earth. |
He is the LORD our God; his judgments are in all the earth. |
|
15 |
Be ye mindful always of his covenant; the word which he commanded to a thousand generations; |
He remembers his covenant forever, the word he commanded, for a thousand generations, |
|
16 |
Even of the covenant which he made with Abraham, and of his oath unto Isaac; |
the covenant he made with Abraham, the oath he swore to Isaac. |
|
17 |
And hath confirmed the same to Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant, |
He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree, to Israel as an everlasting covenant: |
|
18 |
Saying, Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance; |
"To you I will give the land of Canaan as the portion you will inherit." |
|
19 |
When ye were but few, even a few, and strangers in it. |
When they were but few in number, few indeed, and strangers in it, |
|
20 |
And when they went from nation to nation, and from one kingdom to another people; |
they wandered from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another. |
|
21 |
He suffered no man to do them wrong: yea, he reproved kings for their sakes, |
He allowed no man to oppress them; for their sake he rebuked kings: |
|
22 |
Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm. |
"Do not touch my anointed ones; do my prophets no harm." |
|
23 |
Sing unto the LORD, all the earth; shew forth from day to day his salvation. |
Sing to the LORD, all the earth; proclaim his salvation day after day. |
|
24 |
Declare his glory among the heathen; his marvellous works among all nations. |
Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples. |

For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised: he also is to be feared above all gods. |
For great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods. |

For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the LORD made the heavens. |

Glory and honour are in his presence; strength and gladness are in his place. |
Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and joy in his dwelling place. |
|
28 |
Give unto the LORD, ye kindreds of the people, give unto the LORD glory and strength. |
Ascribe to the LORD, O families of nations, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength, |
|
29 |
Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness. |
ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name. Bring an offering and come before him; worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness. |
|
30 |
Fear before him, all the earth: the world also shall be stable, that it be not moved. |
Tremble before him, all the earth! The world is firmly established; it cannot be moved. |
|
31 |
Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice: and let men say among the nations, The LORD reigneth. |
Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let them say among the nations, "The LORD reigns!" |
|
32 |
Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof: let the fields rejoice, and all that is therein. |
Let the sea resound, and all that is in it; let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them! |

33 |
Then shall the trees of the wood sing out at the presence of the LORD, because he cometh to judge the earth. |
Then the trees of the forest will sing, they will sing for joy before the LORD, for he comes to judge the earth. |
|
34 |
O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever. |
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever. |
|
35 |
And say ye, Save us, O God of our salvation, and gather us together, and deliver us from the heathen, that we may give thanks to thy holy name, and glory in thy praise. |
Cry out, "Save us, O God our Savior; gather us and deliver us from the nations, that we may give thanks to your holy name, that we may glory in your praise." |
|
36 |
Blessed be the LORD God of Israel for ever and ever. And all the people said, Amen, and praised the LORD. |
Praise be to the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Then all the people said "Amen" and "Praise the LORD." |
|
37 |
So he left there before the ark of the covenant of the LORD Asaph and his brethren, to minister before the ark continually, as every day's work required: |
David left Asaph and his associates before the ark of the covenant of the LORD to minister there regularly, according to each day's requirements. |
|
38 |
And Obededom with their brethren, threescore and eight; Obededom also the son of Jeduthun and Hosah to be porters: |
He also left Obed-Edom and his sixty-eight associates to minister with them. Obed-Edom son of Jeduthun, and also Hosah, were gatekeepers. |
|
39 |
And Zadok the priest, and his brethren the priests, before the tabernacle of the LORD in the high place that was at Gibeon, |
David left Zadok the priest and his fellow priests before the tabernacle of the LORD at the high place in Gibeon |
|
40 |
To offer burnt offerings unto the LORD upon the altar of the burnt offering continually morning and evening, and to do according to all that is written in the law of the LORD, which he commanded Israel; |
to present burnt offerings to the LORD on the altar of burnt offering regularly, morning and evening, in accordance with everything written in the Law of the LORD, which he had given Israel. |
|
41 |
And with them Heman and Jeduthun, and the rest that were chosen, who were expressed by name, to give thanks to the LORD, because his mercy endureth for ever; |
With them were Heman and Jeduthun and the rest of those chosen and designated by name to give thanks to the LORD, "for his love endures forever." |
|
42 |
And with them Heman and Jeduthun with trumpets and cymbals for those that should make a sound, and with musical instruments of God. And the sons of Jeduthun were porters. |
Heman and Jeduthun were responsible for the sounding of the trumpets and cymbals and for the playing of the other instruments for sacred song. The sons of Jeduthun were stationed at the gate. |
|
43 |
And all the people departed every man to his house: and David returned to bless his house. |

Now it came to pass, as David sat in his house, that David said to Nathan the prophet, Lo, I dwell in an house of cedars, but the ark of the covenant of the LORD remaineth under curtains. |
After David was settled in his palace, he said to Nathan the prophet, "Here I am, living in a palace of cedar, while the ark of the covenant of the LORD is under a tent." |
|
2 |
Then Nathan said unto David, Do all that is in thine heart; for God is with thee. |
Nathan replied to David, "Whatever you have in mind, do it, for God is with you." |
|
3 |
And it came to pass the same night, that the word of God came to Nathan, saying, |
That night the word of God came to Nathan, saying: |
|
4 |
Go and tell David my servant, Thus saith the LORD, Thou shalt not build me an house to dwell in: |
"Go and tell my servant David, `This is what the LORD says: You are not the one to build me a house to dwell in. |
|
5 |
For I have not dwelt in an house since the day that I brought up Israel unto this day; but have gone from tent to tent, and from one tabernacle to another. |
I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought Israel up out of Egypt to this day. I have moved from one tent site to another, from one dwelling place to another. |
|
6 |
Wheresoever I have walked with all Israel, spake I a word to any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to feed my people, saying, Why have ye not built me an house of cedars? |
Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of their leaders whom I commanded to shepherd my people, "Why have you not built me a house of cedar?"' |
|
7 |
Now therefore thus shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, even from following the sheep, that thou shouldest be ruler over my people Israel: |
"Now then, tell my servant David, `This is what the LORD Almighty says: I took you from the pasture and from following the flock, to be ruler over my people Israel. |
|
8 |
And I have been with thee whithersoever thou hast walked, and have cut off all thine enemies from before thee, and have made thee a name like the name of the great men that are in the earth. |
I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name like the names of the greatest men of the earth. |
|
9 |
Also I will ordain a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, and they shall dwell in their place, and shall be moved no more; neither shall the children of wickedness waste them any more, as at the beginning, |
And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning |
|
10 |
And since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel. Moreover I will subdue all thine enemies. Furthermore I tell thee that the LORD will build thee an house. |
and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders over my people Israel. I will also subdue all your enemies. "`I declare to you that the LORD will build a house for you: |
|
11 |
And it shall come to pass, when thy days be expired that thou must go to be with thy fathers, that I will raise up thy seed after thee, which shall be of thy sons; and I will establish his kingdom. |
When your days are over and you go to be with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom. |
|
12 |
He shall build me an house, and I will stablish his throne for ever. |
He is the one who will build a house for me, and I will establish his throne forever. |
|
13 |
I will be his father, and he shall be my son: and I will not take my mercy away from him, as I took it from him that was before thee: |
I will be his father, and he will be my son. I will never take my love away from him, as I took it away from your predecessor. |
|
14 |
But I will settle him in mine house and in my kingdom for ever: and his throne shall be established for evermore. |
I will set him over my house and my kingdom forever; his throne will be established forever.'" |
|
15 |
According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David. |
Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation. |
|
16 |
And David the king came and sat before the LORD, and said, Who am I, O LORD God, and what is mine house, that thou hast brought me hitherto? |
Then King David went in and sat before the LORD, and he said: "Who am I, O LORD God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? |
|
17 |
And yet this was a small thing in thine eyes, O God; for thou hast also spoken of thy servant's house for a great while to come, and hast regarded me according to the estate of a man of high degree, O LORD God. |
And as if this were not enough in your sight, O God, you have spoken about the future of the house of your servant. You have looked on me as though I were the most exalted of men, O LORD God. |
|
18 |
What can David speak more to thee for the honour of thy servant? for thou knowest thy servant. |
"What more can David say to you for honoring your servant? For you know your servant, |
|
19 |
O LORD, for thy servant's sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou done all this greatness, in making known all these great things. |
O LORD. For the sake of your servant and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made known all these great promises. |
|
20 |
O LORD, there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears. |
"There is no one like you, O LORD, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears. |
|
21 |
And what one nation in the earth is like thy people Israel, whom God went to redeem to be his own people, to make thee a name of greatness and terribleness, by driving out nations from before thy people whom thou hast redeemed out of Egypt? |
And who is like your people Israel--the one nation on earth whose God went out to redeem a people for himself, and to make a name for yourself, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out nations from before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt? |
|
22 |
For thy people Israel didst thou make thine own people for ever; and thou, LORD, becamest their God. |
You made your people Israel your very own forever, and you, O LORD, have become their God. |
|
23 |
Therefore now, LORD, let the thing that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant and concerning his house be established for ever, and do as thou hast said. |
"And now, LORD, let the promise you have made concerning your servant and his house be established forever. Do as you promised, |
|
24 |
Let it even be established, that thy name may be magnified for ever, saying, The LORD of hosts is the God of Israel, even a God to Israel: and let the house of David thy servant be established before thee. |
so that it will be established and that your name will be great forever. Then men will say, `The LORD Almighty, the God over Israel, is Israel's God!' And the house of your servant David will be established before you. |
|
25 |
For thou, O my God, hast told thy servant that thou wilt build him an house: therefore thy servant hath found in his heart to pray before thee. |
"You, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build a house for him. So your servant has found courage to pray to you. |
|
26 |
And now, LORD, thou art God, and hast promised this goodness unto thy servant: |
O LORD, you are God! You have promised these good things to your servant. |
|
27 |
Now therefore let it please thee to bless the house of thy servant, that it may be before thee for ever: for thou blessest, O LORD, and it shall be blessed for ever. |
Now you have been pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever in your sight; for you, O LORD, have blessed it, and it will be blessed forever." |

In the course of time, Nahash king of the Ammonites died, and his son succeeded him as king. |

2 |
And David said, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father shewed kindness to me. And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. So the servants of David came into the land of the children of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him. |
David thought, "I will show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me." So David sent a delegation to express his sympathy to Hanun concerning his father. When David's men came to Hanun in the land of the Ammonites to express sympathy to him, |
|
3 |
But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? are not his servants come unto thee for to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out the land? |
the Ammonite nobles said to Hanun, "Do you think David is honoring your father by sending men to you to express sympathy? Haven't his men come to you to explore and spy out the country and overthrow it?" |
|
4 |
Wherefore Hanun took David's servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the midst hard by their buttocks, and sent them away. |
So Hanun seized David's men, shaved them, cut off their garments in the middle at the buttocks, and sent them away. |
|
5 |
Then there went certain, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return. |
When someone came and told David about the men, he sent messengers to meet them, for they were greatly humiliated. The king said, "Stay at Jericho till your beards have grown, and then come back." |
|
6 |
And when the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the children of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, and out of Syriamaachah, and out of Zobah. |
When the Ammonites realized that they had become a stench in David's nostrils, Hanun and the Ammonites sent a thousand talents of silver to hire chariots and charioteers from Aram Naharaim, Aram Maacah and Zobah. |
|
7 |
So they hired thirty and two thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people; who came and pitched before Medeba. And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle. |
They hired thirty-two thousand chariots and charioteers, as well as the king of Maacah with his troops, who came and camped near Medeba, while the Ammonites were mustered from their towns and moved out for battle. |
|
8 |
And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men. |
On hearing this, David sent Joab out with the entire army of fighting men. |
|
9 |
And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array before the gate of the city: and the kings that were come were by themselves in the field. |
The Ammonites came out and drew up in battle formation at the entrance to their city, while the kings who had come were by themselves in the open country. |
|
10 |
Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose out of all the choice of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians. |
Joab saw that there were battle lines in front of him and behind him; so he selected some of the best troops in Israel and deployed them against the Arameans. |
|
11 |
And the rest of the people he delivered unto the hand of Abishai his brother, and they set themselves in array against the children of Ammon. |
He put the rest of the men under the command of Abishai his brother, and they were deployed against the Ammonites. |
|
12 |
And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will help thee. |
Joab said, "If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you are to rescue me; but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will rescue you. |
|
13 |
Be of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God: and let the LORD do that which is good in his sight. |
Be strong and let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God. The LORD will do what is good in his sight." |
|
14 |
So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh before the Syrians unto the battle; and they fled before him. |
Then Joab and the troops with him advanced to fight the Arameans, and they fled before him. |
|
15 |
And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled before Abishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem. |
When the Ammonites saw that the Arameans were fleeing, they too fled before his brother Abishai and went inside the city. So Joab went back to Jerusalem. |
|
16 |
And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they sent messengers, and drew forth the Syrians that were beyond the river: and Shophach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them. |
After the Arameans saw that they had been routed by Israel, they sent messengers and had Arameans brought from beyond the River, with Shophach the commander of Hadadezer's army leading them. |
|
17 |
And it was told David; and he gathered all Israel, and passed over Jordan, and came upon them, and set the battle in array against them. So when David had put the battle in array against the Syrians, they fought with him. |
When David was told of this, he gathered all Israel and crossed the Jordan; he advanced against them and formed his battle lines opposite them. David formed his lines to meet the Arameans in battle, and they fought against him. |
|
18 |
But the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians seven thousand men which fought in chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and killed Shophach the captain of the host. |
But they fled before Israel, and David killed seven thousand of their charioteers and forty thousand of their foot soldiers. He also killed Shophach the commander of their army. |
|
19 |
And when the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with David, and became his servants: neither would the Syrians help the children of Ammon any more. |
When the vassals of Hadadezer saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace with David and became subject to him. So the Arameans were not willing to help the Ammonites anymore. |

1 |
And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel. |
Satan rose up against Israel and incited David to take a census of Israel. |
|
2 |
And David said to Joab and to the rulers of the people, Go, number Israel from Beersheba even to Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it. |
So David said to Joab and the commanders of the troops, "Go and count the Israelites from Beersheba to Dan. Then report back to me so that I may know how many there are." |
|
3 |
And Joab answered, The LORD make his people an hundred times so many more as they be: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord's servants? why then doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel? |
But Joab replied, "May the LORD multiply his troops a hundred times over. My lord the king, are they not all my lord's subjects? Why does my lord want to do this? Why should he bring guilt on Israel?" |
|
4 |
Nevertheless the king's word prevailed against Joab. Wherefore Joab departed, and went throughout all Israel, and came to Jerusalem. |
The king's word, however, overruled Joab; so Joab left and went throughout Israel and then came back to Jerusalem. |
|
5 |
And Joab gave the sum of the number of the people unto David. And all they of Israel were a thousand thousand and an hundred thousand men that drew sword: and Judah was four hundred threescore and ten thousand men that drew sword. |
Joab reported the number of the fighting men to David: In all Israel there were one million one hundred thousand men who could handle a sword, including four hundred and seventy thousand in Judah. |
|
6 |
But Levi and Benjamin counted he not among them: for the king's word was abominable to Joab. |
But Joab did not include Levi and Benjamin in the numbering, because the king's command was repulsive to him. |
|
7 |
And God was displeased with this thing; therefore he smote Israel. |
This command was also evil in the sight of God; so he punished Israel. |
|
8 |
And David said unto God, I have sinned greatly, because I have done this thing: but now, I beseech thee, do away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly. |
Then David said to God, "I have sinned greatly by doing this. Now, I beg you, take away the guilt of your servant. I have done a very foolish thing." |
|
9 |
And the LORD spake unto Gad, David's seer, saying, |
The LORD said to Gad, David's seer, |
|
10 |
Go and tell David, saying, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things: choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee. |
"Go and tell David, `This is what the LORD says: I am giving you three options. Choose one of them for me to carry out against you.'" |
|
11 |
So Gad came to David, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Choose thee |
So Gad went to David and said to him, "This is what the LORD says: `Take your choice: |
|
12 |
Either three years' famine; or three months to be destroyed before thy foes, while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee; or else three days the sword of the LORD, even the pestilence, in the land, and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel. Now therefore advise thyself what word I shall bring again to him that sent me. |
three years of famine, three months of being swept away before your enemies, with their swords overtaking you, or three days of the sword of the LORD--days of plague in the land, with the angel of the LORD ravaging every part of Israel.' Now then, decide how I should answer the one who sent me." |
|
13 |
And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let me fall now into the hand of the LORD; for very great are his mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man. |
David said to Gad, "I am in deep distress. Let me fall into the hands of the LORD, for his mercy is very great; but do not let me fall into the hands of men." |
|
14 |
So the LORD sent pestilence upon Israel: and there fell of Israel seventy thousand men. |
So the LORD sent a plague on Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel fell dead. |
|
15 |
And God sent an angel unto Jerusalem to destroy it: and as he was destroying, the LORD beheld, and he repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed, It is enough, stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD stood by the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite. |
And God sent an angel to destroy Jerusalem. But as the angel was doing so, the LORD saw it and was grieved because of the calamity and said to the angel who was destroying the people, "Enough! Withdraw your hand." The angel of the LORD was then standing at the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. |
|
16 |
And David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of the LORD stand between the earth and the heaven, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders of Israel, who were clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces. |
David looked up and saw the angel of the LORD standing between heaven and earth, with a drawn sword in his hand extended over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell facedown. |
|
17 |
And David said unto God, Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have sinned and done evil indeed; but as for these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, O LORD my God, be on me, and on my father's house; but not on thy people, that they should be plagued. |
David said to God, "Was it not I who ordered the fighting men to be counted? I am the one who has sinned and done wrong. These are but sheep. What have they done? O LORD my God, let your hand fall upon me and my family, but do not let this plague remain on your people." |
|
18 |
Then the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to say to David, that David should go up, and set up an altar unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite. |
Then the angel of the LORD ordered Gad to tell David to go up and build an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. |
|
19 |
And David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spake in the name of the LORD. |
So David went up in obedience to the word that Gad had spoken in the name of the LORD. |
|
20 |
And Ornan turned back, and saw the angel; and his four sons with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat. |
While Araunah was threshing wheat, he turned and saw the angel; his four sons who were with him hid themselves. |
|
21 |
And as David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out of the threshingfloor, and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground. |
Then David approached, and when Araunah looked and saw him, he left the threshing floor and bowed down before David with his face to the ground. |
|
22 |
Then David said to Ornan, Grant me the place of this threshingfloor, that I may build an altar therein unto the LORD: thou shalt grant it me for the full price: that the plague may be stayed from the people. |
David said to him, "Let me have the site of your threshing floor so I can build an altar to the LORD, that the plague on the people may be stopped. Sell it to me at the full price." |
|
23 |
And Ornan said unto David, Take it to thee, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes: lo, I give thee the oxen also for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meat offering; I give it all. |
Araunah said to David, "Take it! Let my lord the king do whatever pleases him. Look, I will give the oxen for the burnt offerings, the threshing sledges for the wood, and the wheat for the grain offering. I will give all this." |
|
24 |
And king David said to Ornan, Nay; but I will verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is thine for the LORD, nor offer burnt offerings without cost. |
But King David replied to Araunah, "No, I insist on paying the full price. I will not take for the LORD what is yours, or sacrifice a burnt offering that costs me nothing." |
|
25 |
So David gave to Ornan for the place six hundred shekels of gold by weight. |
So David paid Araunah six hundred shekels of gold for the site. |
|
26 |
And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called upon the LORD; and he answered him from heaven by fire upon the altar of burnt offering. |
David built an altar to the LORD there and sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. He called on the LORD, and the LORD answered him with fire from heaven on the altar of burnt offering. |
|
27 |
And the LORD commanded the angel; and he put up his sword again into the sheath thereof. |
Then the LORD spoke to the angel, and he put his sword back into its sheath. |
|
28 |
At that time when David saw that the LORD had answered him in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificed there. |
At that time, when David saw that the LORD had answered him on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite, he offered sacrifices there. |
|
29 |
For the tabernacle of the LORD, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of the burnt offering, were at that season in the high place at Gibeon. |
The tabernacle of the LORD, which Moses had made in the desert, and the altar of burnt offering were at that time on the high place at Gibeon. |
|
30 |
But David could not go before it to enquire of God: for he was afraid because of the sword of the angel of the LORD. |
But David could not go before it to inquire of God, because he was afraid of the sword of the angel of the LORD. |

1 |
Then David said, This is the house of the LORD God, and this is the altar of the burnt offering for Israel. |
Then David said, "The house of the LORD God is to be here, and also the altar of burnt offering for Israel." |
|
2 |
And David commanded to gather together the strangers that were in the land of Israel; and he set masons to hew wrought stones to build the house of God. |
So David gave orders to assemble the aliens living in Israel, and from among them he appointed stonecutters to prepare dressed stone for building the house of God. |
|
3 |
And David prepared iron in abundance for the nails for the doors of the gates, and for the joinings; and brass in abundance without weight; |
He provided a large amount of iron to make nails for the doors of the gateways and for the fittings, and more bronze than could be weighed. |
|
4 |
Also cedar trees in abundance: for the Zidonians and they of Tyre brought much cedar wood to David. |
He also provided more cedar logs than could be counted, for the Sidonians and Tyrians had brought large numbers of them to David. |
|
5 |
And David said, Solomon my son is young and tender, and the house that is to be builded for the LORD must be exceeding magnifical, of fame and of glory throughout all countries: I will therefore now make preparation for it. So David prepared abundantly before his death. |
David said, "My son Solomon is young and inexperienced, and the house to be built for the LORD should be of great magnificence and fame and splendor in the sight of all the nations. Therefore I will make preparations for it." So David made extensive preparations before his death. |
|
6 |
Then he called for Solomon his son, and charged him to build an house for the LORD God of Israel. |
Then he called for his son Solomon and charged him to build a house for the LORD, the God of Israel. |
|
7 |
And David said to Solomon, My son, as for me, it was in my mind to build an house unto the name of the LORD my God: |
David said to Solomon: "My son, I had it in my heart to build a house for the Name of the LORD my God. |
|
8 |
But the word of the LORD came to me, saying, Thou hast shed blood abundantly, and hast made great wars: thou shalt not build an house unto my name, because thou hast shed much blood upon the earth in my sight. |
But this word of the LORD came to me: `You have shed much blood and have fought many wars. You are not to build a house for my Name, because you have shed much blood on the earth in my sight. |
|
9 |
Behold, a son shall be born to thee, who shall be a man of rest; and I will give him rest from all his enemies round about: for his name shall be Solomon, and I will give peace and quietness unto Israel in his days. |
But you will have a son who will be a man of peace and rest, and I will give him rest from all his enemies on every side. His name will be Solomon, and I will grant Israel peace and quiet during his reign. |
|
10 |
He shall build an house for my name; and he shall be my son, and I will be his father; and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel for ever. |
He is the one who will build a house for my Name. He will be my son, and I will be his father. And I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel forever.' |
|
11 |
Now, my son, the LORD be with thee; and prosper thou, and build the house of the LORD thy God, as he hath said of thee. |
"Now, my son, the LORD be with you, and may you have success and build the house of the LORD your God, as he said you would. |
|
12 |
Only the LORD give thee wisdom and understanding, and give thee charge concerning Israel, that thou mayest keep the law of the LORD thy God. |
May the LORD give you discretion and understanding when he puts you in command over Israel, so that you may keep the law of the LORD your God. |
|
13 |
Then shalt thou prosper, if thou takest heed to fulfil the statutes and judgments which the LORD charged Moses with concerning Israel: be strong, and of good courage; dread not, nor be dismayed. |
Then you will have success if you are careful to observe the decrees and laws that the LORD gave Moses for Israel. Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged. |
|
14 |
Now, behold, in my trouble I have prepared for the house of the LORD an hundred thousand talents of gold, and a thousand thousand talents of silver; and of brass and iron without weight; for it is in abundance: timber also and stone have I prepared; and thou mayest add thereto. |
"I have taken great pains to provide for the temple of the LORD a hundred thousand talents of gold, a million talents of silver, quantities of bronze and iron too great to be weighed, and wood and stone. And you may add to them. |
|
15 |
Moreover there are workmen with thee in abundance, hewers and workers of stone and timber, and all manner of cunning men for every manner of work. |
You have many workmen: stonecutters, masons and carpenters, as well as men skilled in every kind of work |
|
16 |
Of the gold, the silver, and the brass, and the iron, there is no number. Arise therefore, and be doing, and the LORD be with thee. |
in gold and silver, bronze and iron--craftsmen beyond number. Now begin the work, and the LORD be with you." |
|
17 |
David also commanded all the princes of Israel to help Solomon his son, saying, |
Then David ordered all the leaders of Israel to help his son Solomon. |
|
18 |
Is not the LORD your God with you? and hath he not given you rest on every side? for he hath given the inhabitants of the land into mine hand; and the land is subdued before the LORD, and before his people. |
He said to them, "Is not the LORD your God with you? And has he not granted you rest on every side? For he has handed the inhabitants of the land over to me, and the land is subject to the LORD and to his people. |
|
19 |
Now set your heart and your soul to seek the LORD your God; arise therefore, and build ye the sanctuary of the LORD God, to bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and the holy vessels of God, into the house that is to be built to the name of the LORD. |
Now devote your heart and soul to seeking the LORD your God. Begin to build the sanctuary of the LORD God, so that you may bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD and the sacred articles belonging to God into the temple that will be built for the Name of the LORD." |

1 |
So when David was old and full of days, he made Solomon his son king over Israel. |
When David was old and full of years, he made his son Solomon king over Israel. |
|
2 |
And he gathered together all the princes of Israel, with the priests and the Levites. |
He also gathered together all the leaders of Israel, as well as the priests and Levites. |
|
3 |
Now the Levites were numbered from the age of thirty years and upward: and their number by their polls, man by man, was thirty and eight thousand. |
The Levites thirty years old or more were counted, and the total number of men was thirty-eight thousand. |
|
4 |
Of which, twenty and four thousand were to set forward the work of the house of the LORD; and six thousand were officers and judges: |
David said, "Of these, twenty-four thousand are to supervise the work of the temple of the LORD and six thousand are to be officials and judges. |
|
5 |
Moreover four thousand were porters; and four thousand praised the LORD with the instruments which I made, said David, to praise therewith. |
Four thousand are to be gatekeepers and four thousand are to praise the LORD with the musical instruments I have provided for that purpose." |
|
6 |
And David divided them into courses among the sons of Levi, namely, Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. |
David divided the Levites into groups corresponding to the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath and Merari. |
|
7 |
Of the Gershonites were, Laadan, and Shimei. |
Belonging to the Gershonites: Ladan and Shimei. |
|
8 |
The sons of Laadan; the chief was Jehiel, and Zetham, and Joel, three. |
The sons of Ladan: Jehiel the first, Zetham and Joel--three in all. |
|
9 |
The sons of Shimei; Shelomith, and Haziel, and Haran, three. These were the chief of the fathers of Laadan. |
The sons of Shimei: Shelomoth, Haziel and Haran--three in all. These were the heads of the families of Ladan. |
|
10 |
And the sons of Shimei were, Jahath, Zina, and Jeush, and Beriah. These four were the sons of Shimei. |
And the sons of Shimei: Jahath, Ziza, Jeush and Beriah. These were the sons of Shimei--four in all. |
|
11 |
And Jahath was the chief, and Zizah the second: but Jeush and Beriah had not many sons; therefore they were in one reckoning, according to their father's house. |
Jahath was the first and Ziza the second, but Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons; so they were counted as one family with one assignment. |
|
12 |
The sons of Kohath; Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel, four. |
The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel--four in all. |
|
13 |
The sons of Amram; Aaron and Moses: and Aaron was separated, that he should sanctify the most holy things, he and his sons for ever, to burn incense before the LORD, to minister unto him, and to bless in his name for ever. |
The sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses. Aaron was set apart, he and his descendants forever, to consecrate the most holy things, to offer sacrifices before the LORD, to minister before him and to pronounce blessings in his name forever. |
|
14 |
Now concerning Moses the man of God, his sons were named of the tribe of Levi. |
The sons of Moses the man of God were counted as part of the tribe of Levi. |
|
15 |
The sons of Moses were, Gershom, and Eliezer. |
The sons of Moses: Gershom and Eliezer. |
|
16 |
Of the sons of Gershom, Shebuel was the chief. |
The descendants of Gershom: Shubael was the first. |
|
17 |
And the sons of Eliezer were, Rehabiah the chief. And Eliezer had none other sons; but the sons of Rehabiah were very many. |
The descendants of Eliezer: Rehabiah was the first. Eliezer had no other sons, but the sons of Rehabiah were very numerous. |
|
18 |
Of the sons of Izhar; Shelomith the chief. |
The sons of Izhar: Shelomith was the first. |
|
19 |
Of the sons of Hebron; Jeriah the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth. |
The sons of Hebron: Jeriah the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third and Jekameam the fourth. |
|
20 |
Of the sons of Uzziel; Micah the first and Jesiah the second. |
The sons of Uzziel: Micah the first and Isshiah the second. |
|
21 |
The sons of Merari; Mahli, and Mushi. The sons of Mahli; Eleazar, and Kish. |
The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Mahli: Eleazar and Kish. |
|
22 |
And Eleazar died, and had no sons, but daughters: and their brethren the sons of Kish took them. |
Eleazar died without having sons: he had only daughters. Their cousins, the sons of Kish, married them. |
|
23 |
The sons of Mushi; Mahli, and Eder, and Jeremoth, three. |
The sons of Mushi: Mahli, Eder and Jerimoth--three in all. |
|
24 |
These were the sons of Levi after the house of their fathers; even the chief of the fathers, as they were counted by number of names by their polls, that did the work for the service of the house of the LORD, from the age of twenty years and upward. |
These were the descendants of Levi by their families--the heads of families as they were registered under their names and counted individually, that is, the workers twenty years old or more who served in the temple of the LORD. |
|
25 |
For David said, The LORD God of Israel hath given rest unto his people, that they may dwell in Jerusalem for ever: |
For David had said, "Since the LORD, the God of Israel, has granted rest to his people and has come to dwell in Jerusalem forever, |
|
26 |
And also unto the Levites; they shall no more carry the tabernacle, nor any vessels of it for the service thereof. |
the Levites no longer need to carry the tabernacle or any of the articles used in its service." |
|
27 |
For by the last words of David the Levites were numbered from twenty years old and above: |
According to the last instructions of David, the Levites were counted from those twenty years old or more. |
|
28 |
Because their office was to wait on the sons of Aaron for the service of the house of the LORD, in the courts, and in the chambers, and in the purifying of all holy things, and the work of the service of the house of God; |
The duty of the Levites was to help Aaron's descendants in the service of the temple of the LORD: to be in charge of the courtyards, the side rooms, the purification of all sacred things and the performance of other duties at the house of God. |
|
29 |
Both for the shewbread, and for the fine flour for meat offering, and for the unleavened cakes, and for that which is baked in the pan, and for that which is fried, and for all manner of measure and size; |
They were in charge of the bread set out on the table, the flour for the grain offerings, the unleavened wafers, the baking and the mixing, and all measurements of quantity and size. |
|
30 |
And to stand every morning to thank and praise the LORD, and likewise at even: |
They were also to stand every morning to thank and praise the LORD. They were to do the same in the evening |
|
31 |
And to offer all burnt sacrifices unto the LORD in the sabbaths, in the new moons, and on the set feasts, by number, according to the order commanded unto them, continually before the LORD: |
and whenever burnt offerings were presented to the LORD on Sabbaths and at New Moon festivals and at appointed feasts. They were to serve before the LORD regularly in the proper number and in the way prescribed for them. |
|
32 |

Now these are the divisions of the sons of Aaron. The sons of Aaron; Nadab, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. |
These were the divisions of the sons of Aaron: The sons of Aaron were Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. |
|
2 |
But Nadab and Abihu died before their father, and had no children: therefore Eleazar and Ithamar executed the priest's office. |
But Nadab and Abihu died before their father did, and they had no sons; so Eleazar and Ithamar served as the priests. |
|
3 |
And David distributed them, both Zadok of the sons of Eleazar, and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar, according to their offices in their service. |
With the help of Zadok a descendant of Eleazar and Ahimelech a descendant of Ithamar, David separated them into divisions for their appointed order of ministering. |
|
4 |
And there were more chief men found of the sons of Eleazar than of the sons of Ithamar, and thus were they divided. Among the sons of Eleazar there were sixteen chief men of the house of their fathers, and eight among the sons of Ithamar according to the house of their fathers. |
A larger number of leaders were found among Eleazar's descendants than among Ithamar's, and they were divided accordingly: sixteen heads of families from Eleazar's descendants and eight heads of families from Ithamar's descendants. |
|
5 |
Thus were they divided by lot, one sort with another; for the governors of the sanctuary, and governors of the house of God, were of the sons of Eleazar, and of the sons of Ithamar. |
They divided them impartially by drawing lots, for there were officials of the sanctuary and officials of God among the descendants of both Eleazar and Ithamar. |
|
6 |
And Shemaiah the son of Nethaneel the scribe, one of the Levites, wrote them before the king, and the princes, and Zadok the priest, and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, and before the chief of the fathers of the priests and Levites: one principal household being taken for Eleazar, and one taken for Ithamar. |
The scribe Shemaiah son of Nethanel, a Levite, recorded their names in the presence of the king and of the officials: Zadok the priest, Ahimelech son of Abiathar and the heads of families of the priests and of the Levites--one family being taken from Eleazar and then one from Ithamar. |

David, together with the commanders of the army, set apart some of the sons of Asaph, Heman and Jeduthun for the ministry of prophesying, accompanied by harps, lyres and cymbals. Here is the list of the men who performed this service: |
|
2 |
Of the sons of Asaph; Zaccur, and Joseph, and Nethaniah, and Asarelah, the sons of Asaph under the hands of Asaph, which prophesied according to the order of the king. |

So the number of them, with their brethren that were instructed in the songs of the LORD, even all that were cunning, was two hundred fourscore and eight. |
Along with their relatives--all of them trained and skilled in music for the LORD--they numbered 288. |

David did not take the number of the men twenty years old or less, because the LORD had promised to make Israel as numerous as the stars in the sky. |
|
24 |
Joab the son of Zeruiah began to number, but he finished not, because there fell wrath for it against Israel; neither was the number put in the account of the chronicles of king David. |

1 |
And David assembled all the princes of Israel, the princes of the tribes, and the captains of the companies that ministered to the king by course, and the captains over the thousands, and captains over the hundreds, and the stewards over all the substance and possession of the king, and of his sons, with the officers, and with the mighty men, and with all the valiant men, unto Jerusalem. |
David summoned all the officials of Israel to assemble at Jerusalem: the officers over the tribes, the commanders of the divisions in the service of the king, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, and the officials in charge of all the property and livestock belonging to the king and his sons, together with the palace officials, the mighty men and all the brave warriors. |
|
2 |
Then David the king stood up upon his feet, and said, Hear me, my brethren, and my people: As for me, I had in mine heart to build an house of rest for the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and for the footstool of our God, and had made ready for the building: |
King David rose to his feet and said: "Listen to me, my brothers and my people. I had it in my heart to build a house as a place of rest for the ark of the covenant of the LORD, for the footstool of our God, and I made plans to build it. |
|
3 |
But God said unto me, Thou shalt not build an house for my name, because thou hast been a man of war, and hast shed blood. |
But God said to me, `You are not to build a house for my Name, because you are a warrior and have shed blood.' |
|
4 |
Howbeit the LORD God of Israel chose me before all the house of my father to be king over Israel for ever: for he hath chosen Judah to be the ruler; and of the house of Judah, the house of my father; and among the sons of my father he liked me to make me king over all Israel: |
"Yet the LORD, the God of Israel, chose me from my whole family to be king over Israel forever. He chose Judah as leader, and from the house of Judah he chose my family, and from my father's sons he was pleased to make me king over all Israel. |
|
5 |
And of all my sons, (for the LORD hath given me many sons,) he hath chosen Solomon my son to sit upon the throne of the kingdom of the LORD over Israel. |
Of all my sons--and the LORD has given me many--he has chosen my son Solomon to sit on the throne of the kingdom of the LORD over Israel. |
|
6 |
And he said unto me, Solomon thy son, he shall build my house and my courts: for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be his father. |
He said to me: `Solomon your son is the one who will build my house and my courts, for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be his father. |
|
7 |
Moreover I will establish his kingdom for ever, if he be constant to do my commandments and my judgments, as at this day. |
I will establish his kingdom forever if he is unswerving in carrying out my commands and laws, as is being done at this time.' |
|
8 |
Now therefore in the sight of all Israel the congregation of the LORD, and in the audience of our God, keep and seek for all the commandments of the LORD your God: that ye may possess this good land, and leave it for an inheritance for your children after you for ever. |
"So now I charge you in the sight of all Israel and of the assembly of the LORD, and in the hearing of our God: Be careful to follow all the commands of the LORD your God, that you may possess this good land and pass it on as an inheritance to your descendants forever. |
|
9 |
And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever. |
"And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the LORD searches every heart and understands every motive behind the thoughts. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will reject you forever. |
|
10 |
Take heed now; for the LORD hath chosen thee to build an house for the sanctuary: be strong, and do it. |
Consider now, for the LORD has chosen you to build a temple as a sanctuary. Be strong and do the work." |
|
11 |
Then David gave to Solomon his son the pattern of the porch, and of the houses thereof, and of the treasuries thereof, and of the upper chambers thereof, and of the inner parlours thereof, and of the place of the mercy seat, |
Then David gave his son Solomon the plans for the portico of the temple, its buildings, its storerooms, its upper parts, its inner rooms and the place of atonement. |
|
12 |
And the pattern of all that he had by the spirit, of the courts of the house of the LORD, and of all the chambers round about, of the treasuries of the house of God, and of the treasuries of the dedicated things: |
He gave him the plans of all that the Spirit had put in his mind for the courts of the temple of the LORD and all the surrounding rooms, for the treasuries of the temple of God and for the treasuries for the dedicated things. |
|
13 |
Also for the courses of the priests and the Levites, and for all the work of the service of the house of the LORD, and for all the vessels of service in the house of the LORD. |
He gave him instructions for the divisions of the priests and Levites, and for all the work of serving in the temple of the LORD, as well as for all the articles to be used in its service. |
|
14 |
He gave of gold by weight for things of gold, for all instruments of all manner of service; silver also for all instruments of silver by weight, for all instruments of every kind of service: |
He designated the weight of gold for all the gold articles to be used in various kinds of service, and the weight of silver for all the silver articles to be used in various kinds of service: |
|
15 |
Even the weight for the candlesticks of gold, and for their lamps of gold, by weight for every candlestick, and for the lamps thereof: and for the candlesticks of silver by weight, both for the candlestick, and also for the lamps thereof, according to the use of every candlestick. |
the weight of gold for the gold lampstands and their lamps, with the weight for each lampstand and its lamps; and the weight of silver for each silver lampstand and its lamps, according to the use of each lampstand; |
|
16 |
And by weight he gave gold for the tables of shewbread, for every table; and likewise silver for the tables of silver: |
the weight of gold for each table for consecrated bread; the weight of silver for the silver tables; |
|
17 |
Also pure gold for the fleshhooks, and the bowls, and the cups: and for the golden basons he gave gold by weight for every bason; and likewise silver by weight for every bason of silver: |
the weight of pure gold for the forks, sprinkling bowls and pitchers; the weight of gold for each gold dish; the weight of silver for each silver dish; |
|
18 |
And for the altar of incense refined gold by weight; and gold for the pattern of the chariot of the cherubims, that spread out their wings, and covered the ark of the covenant of the LORD. |
and the weight of the refined gold for the altar of incense. He also gave him the plan for the chariot, that is, the cherubim of gold that spread their wings and shelter the ark of the covenant of the LORD. |
|
19 |
All this, said David, the LORD made me understand in writing by his hand upon me, even all the works of this pattern. |
"All this," David said, "I have in writing from the hand of the LORD upon me, and he gave me understanding in all the details of the plan." |
|
20 |
And David said to Solomon his son, Be strong and of good courage, and do it: fear not, nor be dismayed: for the LORD God, even my God, will be with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee, until thou hast finished all the work for the service of the house of the LORD. |
David also said to Solomon his son, "Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you until all the work for the service of the temple of the LORD is finished. |
|
21 |
And, behold, the courses of the priests and the Levites, even they shall be with thee for all the service of the house of God: and there shall be with thee for all manner of workmanship every willing skilful man, for any manner of service: also the princes and all the people will be wholly at thy commandment. |
The divisions of the priests and Levites are ready for all the work on the temple of God, and every willing man skilled in any craft will help you in all the work. The officials and all the people will obey your every command." |

1 |
Furthermore David the king said unto all the congregation, Solomon my son, whom alone God hath chosen, is yet young and tender, and the work is great: for the palace is not for man, but for the LORD God. |
Then King David said to the whole assembly: "My son Solomon, the one whom God has chosen, is young and inexperienced. The task is great, because this palatial structure is not for man but for the LORD God. |
|
2 |
Now I have prepared with all my might for the house of my God the gold for things to be made of gold, and the silver for things of silver, and the brass for things of brass, the iron for things of iron, and wood for things of wood; onyx stones, and stones to be set, glistering stones, and of divers colours, and all manner of precious stones, and marble stones in abundance. |
With all my resources I have provided for the temple of my God--gold for the gold work, silver for the silver, bronze for the bronze, iron for the iron and wood for the wood, as well as onyx for the settings, turquoise, stones of various colors, and all kinds of fine stone and marble--all of these in large quantities. |
|
3 |
Moreover, because I have set my affection to the house of my God, I have of mine own proper good, of gold and silver, which I have given to the house of my God, over and above all that I have prepared for the holy house. |
Besides, in my devotion to the temple of my God I now give my personal treasures of gold and silver for the temple of my God, over and above everything I have provided for this holy temple: |
|
4 |
Even three thousand talents of gold, of the gold of Ophir, and seven thousand talents of refined silver, to overlay the walls of the houses withal: |
three thousand talents of gold (gold of Ophir) and seven thousand talents of refined silver, for the overlaying of the walls of the buildings, |
|
5 |
The gold for things of gold, and the silver for things of silver, and for all manner of work to be made by the hands of artificers. And who then is willing to consecrate his service this day unto the LORD? |
for the gold work and the silver work, and for all the work to be done by the craftsmen. Now, who is willing to consecrate himself today to the LORD?" |
|
6 |
Then the chief of the fathers and princes of the tribes of Israel and the captains of thousands and of hundreds, with the rulers of the king's work, offered willingly, |
Then the leaders of families, the officers of the tribes of Israel, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, and the officials in charge of the king's work gave willingly. |
|
7 |
And gave for the service of the house of God of gold five thousand talents and ten thousand drams, and of silver ten thousand talents, and of brass eighteen thousand talents, and one hundred thousand talents of iron. |
They gave toward the work on the temple of God five thousand talents and ten thousand darics of gold, ten thousand talents of silver, eighteen thousand talents of bronze and a hundred thousand talents of iron. |
|
8 |
And they with whom precious stones were found gave them to the treasure of the house of the LORD, by the hand of Jehiel the Gershonite. |
Any who had precious stones gave them to the treasury of the temple of the LORD in the custody of Jehiel the Gershonite. |
|
9 |
Then the people rejoiced, for that they offered willingly, because with perfect heart they offered willingly to the LORD: and David the king also rejoiced with great joy. |
The people rejoiced at the willing response of their leaders, for they had given freely and wholeheartedly to the LORD. David the king also rejoiced greatly. |
|
10 |
Wherefore David blessed the LORD before all the congregation: and David said, Blessed be thou, LORD God of Israel our father, for ever and ever. |
David praised the LORD in the presence of the whole assembly, saying, "Praise be to you, O LORD, God of our father Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. |
|
11 |
Thine, O LORD is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all. |
Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, O LORD, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all. |
|
12 |
Both riches and honour come of thee, and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all. |
Wealth and honor come from you; you are the ruler of all things. In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all. |
|
13 |
Now therefore, our God, we thank thee, and praise thy glorious name. |
Now, our God, we give you thanks, and praise your glorious name. |
|
14 |
But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly after this sort? for all things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee. |
"But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand. |
|
15 |
For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers: our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding. |
We are aliens and strangers in your sight, as were all our forefathers. Our days on earth are like a shadow, without hope. |
|
16 |
O LORD our God, all this store that we have prepared to build thee an house for thine holy name cometh of thine hand, and is all thine own. |
O LORD our God, as for all this abundance that we have provided for building you a temple for your Holy Name, it comes from your hand, and all of it belongs to you. |
|
17 |
I know also, my God, that thou triest the heart, and hast pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of mine heart I have willingly offered all these things: and now have I seen with joy thy people, which are present here, to offer willingly unto thee. |
I know, my God, that you test the heart and are pleased with integrity. All these things have I given willingly and with honest intent. And now I have seen with joy how willingly your people who are here have given to you. |
|
18 |
O LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, our fathers, keep this for ever in the imagination of the thoughts of the heart of thy people, and prepare their heart unto thee: |
O LORD, God of our fathers Abraham, Isaac and Israel, keep this desire in the hearts of your people forever, and keep their hearts loyal to you. |
|
19 |
And give unto Solomon my son a perfect heart, to keep thy commandments, thy testimonies, and thy statutes, and to do all these things, and to build the palace, for the which I have made provision. |
And give my son Solomon the wholehearted devotion to keep your commands, requirements and decrees and to do everything to build the palatial structure for which I have provided." |
|
20 |
And David said to all the congregation, Now bless the LORD your God. And all the congregation blessed the LORD God of their fathers, and bowed down their heads, and worshipped the LORD, and the king. |
Then David said to the whole assembly, "Praise the LORD your God." So they all praised the LORD, the God of their fathers; they bowed low and fell prostrate before the LORD and the king. |
|
21 |
And they sacrificed sacrifices unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings unto the LORD, on the morrow after that day, even a thousand bullocks, a thousand rams, and a thousand lambs, with their drink offerings, and sacrifices in abundance for all Israel: |
The next day they made sacrifices to the LORD and presented burnt offerings to him: a thousand bulls, a thousand rams and a thousand male lambs, together with their drink offerings, and other sacrifices in abundance for all Israel. |
|
22 |
And did eat and drink before the LORD on that day with great gladness. And they made Solomon the son of David king the second time, and anointed him unto the LORD to be the chief governor, and Zadok to be priest. |
They ate and drank with great joy in the presence of the LORD that day. Then they acknowledged Solomon son of David as king a second time, anointing him before the LORD to be ruler and Zadok to be priest. |
|
23 |
Then Solomon sat on the throne of the LORD as king instead of David his father, and prospered; and all Israel obeyed him. |
So Solomon sat on the throne of the LORD as king in place of his father David. He prospered and all Israel obeyed him. |
|
24 |
And all the princes, and the mighty men, and all the sons likewise of king David, submitted themselves unto Solomon the king. |
All the officers and mighty men, as well as all of King David's sons, pledged their submission to King Solomon. |
|
25 |
And the LORD magnified Solomon exceedingly in the sight of all Israel, and bestowed upon him such royal majesty as had not been on any king before him in Israel. |
The LORD highly exalted Solomon in the sight of all Israel and bestowed on him royal splendor such as no king over Israel ever had before. |
|
26 |
Thus David the son of Jesse reigned over all Israel. |
David son of Jesse was king over all Israel. |
|
27 |
And the time that he reigned over Israel was forty years; seven years reigned he in Hebron, and thirty and three years reigned he in Jerusalem. |
He ruled over Israel forty years--seven in Hebron and thirty-three in Jerusalem. |
|
28 |
And he died in a good old age, full of days, riches, and honour: and Solomon his son reigned in his stead. |
He died at a good old age, having enjoyed long life, wealth and honor. His son Solomon succeeded him as king. |
|
29 |
Now the acts of David the king, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of Samuel the seer, and in the book of Nathan the prophet, and in the book of Gad the seer, |
As for the events of King David's reign, from beginning to end, they are written in the records of Samuel the seer, the records of Nathan the prophet and the records of Gad the seer, |
|
30 |
With all his reign and his might, and the times that went over him, and over Israel, and over all the kingdoms of the countries. |
together with the details of his reign and power, and the circumstances that surrounded him and Israel and the kingdoms of all the other lands. |
|
