Proverbs - Chapter 1

Verse King James Version New International Version Note
1 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel; The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:
2 To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding; for attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight;
3 To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity; for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair;
4 To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion. for giving prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young--
5 A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels: let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance--
6 To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings. for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise.
7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother: Listen, my son, to your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's teaching.
9 For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck. They will be a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.
10 My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not. My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them.
11 If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause: If they say, "Come along with us; let's lie in wait for someone's blood, let's waylay some harmless soul;
12 Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit: let's swallow them alive, like the grave, and whole, like those who go down to the pit;
13 We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil: we will get all sorts of valuable things and fill our houses with plunder;
14 Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse: throw in your lot with us, and we will share a common purse"--
15 My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path: my son, do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths;
16 For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood. for their feet rush into sin, they are swift to shed blood.
17 Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird. How useless to spread a net in full view of all the birds!
18 And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives. These men lie in wait for their own blood; they waylay only themselves!
19 So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof. Such is the end of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the lives of those who get it.
20 Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets: Wisdom calls aloud in the street, she raises her voice in the public squares;
21 She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying, at the head of the noisy streets she cries out, in the gateways of the city she makes her speech:
22 How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge? "How long will you simple ones love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge?
23 Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you. If you had responded to my rebuke, I would have poured out my heart to you and made my thoughts known to you.
24 Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; But since you rejected me when I called and no one gave heed when I stretched out my hand,
25 But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof: since you ignored all my advice and would not accept my rebuke,
26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh; I in turn will laugh at your disaster; I will mock when calamity overtakes you--
27 When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you. when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you.
28 Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: "Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me.
29 For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD: Since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD,
30 They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof. since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke,
31 Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.
32 For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them. For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them;
33 But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil. but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm."

Proverbs - Chapter 2

Verse King James Version New International Version Note
1 My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you,
2 So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding,
3 Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding,
4 If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure,
5 Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God.
6 For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
7 He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly. He holds victory in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless,
8 He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints. for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones.
9 Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path. Then you will understand what is right and just and fair--every good path.
10 When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul; For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.
11 Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee: Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you.
12 To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things; Wisdom will save you from the ways of wicked men, from men whose words are perverse,
13 Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness; who leave the straight paths to walk in dark ways,
14 Who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the frowardness of the wicked; who delight in doing wrong and rejoice in the perverseness of evil,
15 Whose ways are crooked, and they froward in their paths: whose paths are crooked and who are devious in their ways.
16 To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words; It will save you also from the adulteress, from the wayward wife with her seductive words,
17 Which forsaketh the guide of her youth, and forgetteth the covenant of her God. who has left the partner of her youth and ignored the covenant she made before God.
18 For her house inclineth unto death, and her paths unto the dead. For her house leads down to death and her paths to the spirits of the dead.
19 None that go unto her return again, neither take they hold of the paths of life. None who go to her return or attain the paths of life.
20 That thou mayest walk in the way of good men, and keep the paths of the righteous. Thus you will walk in the ways of good men and keep to the paths of the righteous.
21 For the upright shall dwell in the land, and the perfect shall remain in it. For the upright will live in the land, and the blameless will remain in it;
22 But the wicked shall be cut off from the earth, and the transgressors shall be rooted out of it. but the wicked will be cut off from the land, and the unfaithful will be torn from it.

Proverbs - Chapter 3

Verse King James Version New International Version Note
1 My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart,
2 For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee. for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity.
3 Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.
4 So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man. Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.
5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil.
8 It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.
9 Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops;
10 So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine. then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.
11 My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction: My son, do not despise the LORD's discipline and do not resent his rebuke,
12 For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth. because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.
13 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding,
14 For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold.
15 She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her.
16 Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor.
17 Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace.
18 She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her. She is a tree of life to those who embrace her; those who lay hold of her will be blessed.
19 The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens. By wisdom the LORD laid the earth's foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place;
20 By his knowledge the depths are broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew. by his knowledge the deeps were divided, and the clouds let drop the dew.
21 My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion: My son, preserve sound judgment and discernment, do not let them out of your sight;
22 So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck. they will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck.
23 Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble. Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble;
24 When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet. when you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
25 Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh. Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked,
26 For the LORD shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken. for the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being snared.
27 Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it. Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act.
28 Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and to morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee. Do not say to your neighbor, "Come back later; I'll give it tomorrow"-- when you now have it with you.
29 Devise not evil against thy neighbour, seeing he dwelleth securely by thee. Do not plot harm against your neighbor, who lives trustfully near you.
30 Strive not with a man without cause, if he have done thee no harm. Do not accuse a man for no reason-- when he has done you no harm.
31 Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways. Do not envy a violent man or choose any of his ways,
32 For the froward is abomination to the LORD: but his secret is with the righteous. for the LORD detests a perverse man but takes the upright into his confidence.
33 The curse of the LORD is in the house of the wicked: but he blesseth the habitation of the just. The LORD's curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the home of the righteous.
34 Surely he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace unto the lowly. He mocks proud mockers but gives grace to the humble.
35 The wise shall inherit glory: but shame shall be the promotion of fools. The wise inherit honor, but fools he holds up to shame.

Proverbs - Chapter 4

Verse King James Version New International Version Note
1 Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding. Listen, my sons, to a father's instruction; pay attention and gain understanding.
2 For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law. I give you sound learning, so do not forsake my teaching.
3 For I was my father's son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother. When I was a boy in my father's house, still tender, and an only child of my mother,
4 He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live. he taught me and said, "Lay hold of my words with all your heart; keep my commands and you will live.
5 Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth. Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or swerve from them.
6 Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee. Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you.
7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.
8 Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her. Esteem her, and she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will honor you.
9 She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee. She will set a garland of grace on your head and present you with a crown of splendor."
10 Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many. Listen, my son, accept what I say, and the years of your life will be many.
11 I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths. I guide you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths.
12 When thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened; and when thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble. When you walk, your steps will not be hampered; when you run, you will not stumble.
13 Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life. Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life.
14 Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men. Do not set foot on the path of the wicked or walk in the way of evil men.
15 Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away. Avoid it, do not travel on it; turn from it and go on your way.
16 For they sleep not, except they have done mischief; and their sleep is taken away, unless they cause some to fall. For they cannot sleep till they do evil; they are robbed of slumber till they make someone fall.
17 For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence. They eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence.
18 But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day. The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining ever brighter till the full light of day.
19 The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble. But the way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know what makes them stumble.
20 My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words.
21 Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart;
22 For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh. for they are life to those who find them and health to a man's whole body.
23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.
24 Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee. Put away perversity from your mouth; keep corrupt talk far from your lips.
25 Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee. Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you.
26 Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established. Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm.
27 Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil. Do not swerve to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.

Proverbs - Chapter 5

Verse King James Version New International Version Note
1 My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding: My son, pay attention to my wisdom, listen well to my words of insight,
2 That thou mayest regard discretion, and that thy lips may keep knowledge. that you may maintain discretion and your lips may preserve knowledge.
3 For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil: For the lips of an adulteress drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil;
4 But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword. but in the end she is bitter as gall, sharp as a double-edged sword.
5 Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell. Her feet go down to death; her steps lead straight to the grave.
6 Lest thou shouldest ponder the path of life, her ways are moveable, that thou canst not know them. She gives no thought to the way of life; her paths are crooked, but she knows it not.
7 Hear me now therefore, O ye children, and depart not from the words of my mouth. Now then, my sons, listen to me; do not turn aside from what I say.
8 Remove thy way far from her, and come not nigh the door of her house: Keep to a path far from her, do not go near the door of her house,
9 Lest thou give thine honour unto others, and thy years unto the cruel: lest you give your best strength to others and your years to one who is cruel,
10 Lest strangers be filled with thy wealth; and thy labours be in the house of a stranger; lest strangers feast on your wealth and your toil enrich another man's house.
11 And thou mourn at the last, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed, At the end of your life you will groan, when your flesh and body are spent.
12 And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof; You will say, "How I hated discipline! How my heart spurned correction!
13 And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me! I would not obey my teachers or listen to my instructors.
14 I was almost in all evil in the midst of the congregation and assembly. I have come to the brink of utter ruin in the midst of the whole assembly."
15 Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well. Drink water from your own cistern, running water from your own well.
16 Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets. Should your springs overflow in the streets, your streams of water in the public squares?
17 Let them be only thine own, and not strangers' with thee. Let them be yours alone, never to be shared with strangers.
18 Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth. May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.
19 Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love. A loving doe, a graceful deer-- may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be captivated by her love.
20 And why wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger? Why be captivated, my son, by an adulteress? Why embrace the bosom of another man's wife?
21 For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings. For a man's ways are in full view of the LORD, and he examines all his paths.
22 His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins. The evil deeds of a wicked man ensnare him; the cords of his sin hold him fast.
23 He shall die without instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray. He will die for lack of discipline, led astray by his own great folly.

Proverbs - Chapter 6

Verse King James Version New International Version Note
1 My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger, My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor, if you have struck hands in pledge for another,
2 Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth. if you have been trapped by what you said, ensnared by the words of your mouth,
3 Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend. then do this, my son, to free yourself, since you have fallen into your neighbor's hands: Go and humble yourself; press your plea with your neighbor!
4 Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids. Allow no sleep to your eyes, no slumber to your eyelids.
5 Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler. Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the snare of the fowler.
6 Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise!
7 Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, It has no commander, no overseer or ruler,
8 Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest. yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.
9 How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep?
10 Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest--
11 So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man. and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man.
12 A naughty person, a wicked man, walketh with a froward mouth. A scoundrel and villain, who goes about with a corrupt mouth,
13 He winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he teacheth with his fingers; who winks with his eye, signals with his feet and motions with his fingers,
14 Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth discord. who plots evil with deceit in his heart-- he always stirs up dissension.
15 Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy. Therefore disaster will overtake him in an instant; he will suddenly be destroyed--without remedy.
16 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him:
17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,
18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil,
19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren. a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.
20 My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother: My son, keep your father's commands and do not forsake your mother's teaching.
21 Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck. Bind them upon your heart forever; fasten them around your neck.
22 When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee. When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you.
23 For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life: For these commands are a lamp, this teaching is a light, and the corrections of discipline are the way to life,
24 To keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman. keeping you from the immoral woman, from the smooth tongue of the wayward wife.
25 Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids. Do not lust in your heart after her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes,
26 For by means of a whorish woman a man is brought to a piece of bread: and the adultress will hunt for the precious life. for the prostitute reduces you to a loaf of bread, and the adulteress preys upon your very life.
27 Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned? Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned?
28 Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned? Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched?
29 So he that goeth in to his neighbour's wife; whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent. So is he who sleeps with another man's wife; no one who touches her will go unpunished.
30 Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry; Men do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy his hunger when he is starving.
31 But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house. Yet if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold, though it costs him all the wealth of his house.
32 But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul. But a man who commits adultery lacks judgment; whoever does so destroys himself.
33 A wound and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away. Blows and disgrace are his lot, and his shame will never be wiped away;
34 For jealousy is the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance. for jealousy arouses a husband's fury, and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge.
35 He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts. He will not accept any compensation; he will refuse the bribe, however great it is.

Proverbs - Chapter 7

Verse King James Version New International Version Note
1 My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee. My son, keep my words and store up my commands within you.
2 Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye. Keep my commands and you will live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.
3 Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thine heart. Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.
4 Say unto wisdom, Thou art my sister; and call understanding thy kinswoman: Say to wisdom, "You are my sister," and call understanding your kinsman;
5 That they may keep thee from the strange woman, from the stranger which flattereth with her words. they will keep you from the adulteress, from the wayward wife with her seductive words.
6 For at the window of my house I looked through my casement, At the window of my house I looked out through the lattice.
7 And beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding, I saw among the simple, I noticed among the young men, a youth who lacked judgment.
8 Passing through the street near her corner; and he went the way to her house, He was going down the street near her corner, walking along in the direction of her house
9 In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night: at twilight, as the day was fading, as the dark of night set in.
10 And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart. Then out came a woman to meet him, dressed like a prostitute and with crafty intent.
11 (She is loud and stubborn; her feet abide not in her house: (She is loud and defiant, her feet never stay at home;
12 Now is she without, now in the streets, and lieth in wait at every corner.) now in the street, now in the squares, at every corner she lurks.)
13 So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him, She took hold of him and kissed him and with a brazen face she said:
14 I have peace offerings with me; this day have I payed my vows. "I have fellowship offerings at home; today I fulfilled my vows.
15 Therefore came I forth to meet thee, diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee. So I came out to meet you; I looked for you and have found you!
16 I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt. I have covered my bed with colored linens from Egypt.
17 I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes and cinnamon.
18 Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning: let us solace ourselves with loves. Come, let's drink deep of love till morning; let's enjoy ourselves with love!
19 For the goodman is not at home, he is gone a long journey: My husband is not at home; he has gone on a long journey.
20 He hath taken a bag of money with him, and will come home at the day appointed. He took his purse filled with money and will not be home till full moon."

22 He goeth after her straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks; All at once he followed her like an ox going to the slaughter, like a deer stepping into a noose
23 Till a dart strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life. till an arrow pierces his liver, like a bird darting into a snare, little knowing it will cost him his life.
24 Hearken unto me now therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth. Now then, my sons, listen to me; pay attention to what I say.
25 Let not thine heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths. Do not let your heart turn to her ways or stray into her paths.

Proverbs - Chapter 8

Verse King James Version New International Version Note
1 Doth not wisdom cry? and understanding put forth her voice? Does not wisdom call out? Does not understanding raise her voice?
2 She standeth in the top of high places, by the way in the places of the paths. On the heights along the way, where the paths meet, she takes her stand;
3 She crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors. beside the gates leading into the city, at the entrances, she cries aloud:
4 Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of man. "To you, O men, I call out; I raise my voice to all mankind.
5 O ye simple, understand wisdom: and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart. You who are simple, gain prudence; you who are foolish, gain understanding.
6 Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips shall be right things. Listen, for I have worthy things to say; I open my lips to speak what is right.
7 For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness is an abomination to my lips. My mouth speaks what is true, for my lips detest wickedness.
8 All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing froward or perverse in them. All the words of my mouth are just; none of them is crooked or perverse.
9 They are all plain to him that understandeth, and right to them that find knowledge. To the discerning all of them are right; they are faultless to those who have knowledge.
10 Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold. Choose my instruction instead of silver, knowledge rather than choice gold,
11 For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it. for wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her.
12 I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions. "I, wisdom, dwell together with prudence; I possess knowledge and discretion.
13 The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate. To fear the LORD is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech.
14 Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength. Counsel and sound judgment are mine; I have understanding and power.
15 By me kings reign, and princes decree justice. By me kings reign and rulers make laws that are just;
16 By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth. by me princes govern, and all nobles who rule on earth.
17 I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me. I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me.
18 Riches and honour are with me; yea, durable riches and righteousness. With me are riches and honor, enduring wealth and prosperity.
19 My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver. My fruit is better than fine gold; what I yield surpasses choice silver.
20 I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment: I walk in the way of righteousness, along the paths of justice,
21 That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures. bestowing wealth on those who love me and making their treasuries full.
22 The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old. "The LORD brought me forth as the first of his works, before his deeds of old;
23 I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was. I was appointed from eternity, from the beginning, before the world began.
24 When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water. When there were no oceans, I was given birth, when there were no springs abounding with water;
25 Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth: before the mountains were settled in place, before the hills, I was given birth,
26 While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world. before he made the earth or its fields or any of the dust of the world.
27 When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth: I was there when he set the heavens in place, when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep,
28 When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep: when he established the clouds above and fixed securely the fountains of the deep,
29 When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth: when he gave the sea its boundary so the waters would not overstep his command, and when he marked out the foundations of the earth.
30 Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him; Then I was the craftsman at his side. I was filled with delight day after day, rejoicing always in his presence,
31 Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men. rejoicing in his whole world and delighting in mankind.
32 Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways. "Now then, my sons, listen to me; blessed are those who keep my ways.
33 Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not. Listen to my instruction and be wise; do not ignore it.
34 Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors. Blessed is the man who listens to me, watching daily at my doors, waiting at my doorway.
35 For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD. For whoever finds me finds life and receives favor from the LORD.
36 But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death. But whoever fails to find me harms himself; all who hate me love death."

12 The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them. Ears that hear and eyes that see-- the LORD has made them both.
13 Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread. Do not love sleep or you will grow poor; stay awake and you will have food to spare.
14 It is naught, it is naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth. "It's no good, it's no good!" says the buyer; then off he goes and boasts about his purchase.
15 There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel. Gold there is, and rubies in abundance, but lips that speak knowledge are a rare jewel.
16 Take his garment that is surety for a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman. Take the garment of one who puts up security for a stranger; hold it in pledge if he does it for a wayward woman.
17 Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel. Food gained by fraud tastes sweet to a man, but he ends up with a mouth full of gravel.
18 Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war. Make plans by seeking advice; if you wage war, obtain guidance.
19 He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips. A gossip betrays a confidence; so avoid a man who talks too much.
20 Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness. If a man curses his father or mother, his lamp will be snuffed out in pitch darkness.
21 An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed. An inheritance quickly gained at the beginning will not be blessed at the end.
22 Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee. Do not say, "I'll pay you back for this wrong!" Wait for the LORD, and he will deliver you.
23 Divers weights are an abomination unto the LORD; and a false balance is not good. The LORD detests differing weights, and dishonest scales do not please him.
24 Man's goings are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way? A man's steps are directed by the LORD. How then can anyone understand his own way?
25 It is a snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, and after vows to make enquiry. It is a trap for a man to dedicate something rashly and only later to consider his vows.
26 A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them. A wise king winnows out the wicked; he drives the threshing wheel over them.
27 The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly. The lamp of the LORD searches the spirit of a man ; it searches out his inmost being.
28 Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy. Love and faithfulness keep a king safe; through love his throne is made secure.
29 The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the grey head. The glory of young men is their strength, gray hair the splendor of the old.
30 The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil: so do stripes the inward parts of the belly. Blows and wounds cleanse away evil, and beatings purge the inmost being.

Proverbs - Chapter 21

Verse King James Version New International Version Note
1 The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will. The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD; he directs it like a watercourse wherever he pleases.
2 Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts. All a man's ways seem right to him, but the LORD weighs the heart.
3 To do justice and judgment is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice. To do what is right and just is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.
4 An high look, and a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked, is sin. Haughty eyes and a proud heart, the lamp of the wicked, are sin!
5 The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of every one that is hasty only to want. The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.
6 The getting of treasures by a lying tongue is a vanity tossed to and fro of them that seek death. A fortune made by a lying tongue is a fleeting vapor and a deadly snare.
7 The robbery of the wicked shall destroy them; because they refuse to do judgment. The violence of the wicked will drag them away, for they refuse to do what is right.
8 The way of man is froward and strange: but as for the pure, his work is right. The way of the guilty is devious, but the conduct of the innocent is upright.
9 It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman in a wide house. Better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife.
10 The soul of the wicked desireth evil: his neighbour findeth no favour in his eyes. The wicked man craves evil; his neighbor gets no mercy from him.
11 When the scorner is punished, the simple is made wise: and when the wise is instructed, he receiveth knowledge. When a mocker is punished, the simple gain wisdom; when a wise man is instructed, he gets knowledge.
12 The righteous man wisely considereth the house of the wicked: but God overthroweth the wicked for their wickedness. The Righteous One takes note of the house of the wicked and brings the wicked to ruin.
13 Whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be heard. If a man shuts his ears to the cry of the poor, he too will cry out and not be answered.
14 A gift in secret pacifieth anger: and a reward in the bosom strong wrath. A gift given in secret soothes anger, and a bribe concealed in the cloak pacifies great wrath.
15 It is joy to the just to do judgment: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity. When justice is done, it brings joy to the righteous but terror to evildoers.
16 The man that wandereth out of the way of understanding shall remain in the congregation of the dead. A man who strays from the path of understanding comes to rest in the company of the dead.
17 He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich. He who loves pleasure will become poor; whoever loves wine and oil will never be rich.
18 The wicked shall be a ransom for the righteous, and the transgressor for the upright. The wicked become a ransom for the righteous, and the unfaithful for the upright.
19 It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and an angry woman. Better to live in a desert than with a quarrelsome and ill-tempered wife.
20 There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spendeth it up. In the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil, but a foolish man devours all he has.
21 He that followeth after righteousness and mercy findeth life, righteousness, and honour. He who pursues righteousness and love finds life, prosperity and honor.
22 A wise man scaleth the city of the mighty, and casteth down the strength of the confidence thereof. A wise man attacks the city of the mighty and pulls down the stronghold in which they trust.
23 Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles. He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity.
24 Proud and haughty scorner is his name, who dealeth in proud wrath. The proud and arrogant man--"Mocker" is his name; he behaves with overweening pride.
25 The desire of the slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour. The sluggard's craving will be the death of him, because his hands refuse to work.
26 He coveteth greedily all the day long: but the righteous giveth and spareth not. All day long he craves for more, but the righteous give without sparing.
27 The sacrifice of the wicked is abomination: how much more, when he bringeth it with a wicked mind? The sacrifice of the wicked is detestable-- how much more so when brought with evil intent!
28 A false witness shall perish: but the man that heareth speaketh constantly. A false witness will perish, and whoever listens to him will be destroyed forever.
29 A wicked man hardeneth his face: but as for the upright, he directeth his way. A wicked man puts up a bold front, but an upright man gives thought to his ways.
30 There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the LORD. There is no wisdom, no insight, no plan that can succeed against the LORD.
31 The horse is prepared against the day of battle: but safety is of the LORD. The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but victory rests with the LORD.

Proverbs - Chapter 22

Verse King James Version New International Version Note
1 A GOOD name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold. A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.
2 The rich and poor meet together: the LORD is the maker of them all. Rich and poor have this in common: The LORD is the Maker of them all.
3 A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished. A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it.
4 By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honour, and life. Humility and the fear of the LORD bring wealth and honor and life.
5 Thorns and snares are in the way of the froward: he that doth keep his soul shall be far from them. In the paths of the wicked lie thorns and snares, but he who guards his soul stays far from them.
6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.
7 The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender. The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.
8 He that soweth iniquity shall reap vanity: and the rod of his anger shall fail. He who sows wickedness reaps trouble, and the rod of his fury will be destroyed.
9 He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor. A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor.
10 Cast out the scorner, and contention shall go out; yea, strife and reproach shall cease. Drive out the mocker, and out goes strife; quarrels and insults are ended.
11 He that loveth pureness of heart, for the grace of his lips the king shall be his friend. He who loves a pure heart and whose speech is gracious will have the king for his friend.
12 The eyes of the LORD preserve knowledge, and he overthroweth the words of the transgressor. The eyes of the LORD keep watch over knowledge, but he frustrates the words of the unfaithful.
13 The slothful man saith, There is a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets. The sluggard says, "There is a lion outside!" or, "I will be murdered in the streets!"
14 The mouth of strange women is a deep pit: he that is abhorred of the LORD shall fall therein. The mouth of an adulteress is a deep pit; he who is under the LORD's wrath will fall into it.
15 Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him. Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far from him.
16 He that oppresseth the poor to increase his riches, and he that giveth to the rich, shall surely come to want. He who oppresses the poor to increase his wealth and he who gives gifts to the rich--both come to poverty.
17 Bow down thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thine heart unto my knowledge. Pay attention and listen to the sayings of the wise; apply your heart to what I teach,
18 For it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee; they shall withal be fitted in thy lips. for it is pleasing when you keep them in your heart and have all of them ready on your lips.
19 That thy trust may be in the LORD, I have made known to thee this day, even to thee. So that your trust may be in the LORD, I teach you today, even you.
20 Have not I written to thee excellent things in counsels and knowledge, Have I not written thirty sayings for you, sayings of counsel and knowledge,
21 That I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth; that thou mightest answer the words of truth to them that send unto thee? teaching you true and reliable words, so that you can give sound answers to him who sent you?
22 Rob not the poor, because he is poor: neither oppress the afflicted in the gate: Do not exploit the poor because they are poor and do not crush the needy in court,
23 For the LORD will plead their cause, and spoil the soul of those that spoiled them. for the LORD will take up their case and will plunder those who plunder them.
24 Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go: Do not make friends with a hot-tempered man, do not associate with one easily angered,
25 Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul. or you may learn his ways and get yourself ensnared.
26 Be not thou one of them that strike hands, or of them that are sureties for debts. Do not be a man who strikes hands in pledge or puts up security for debts;
27 If thou hast nothing to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee? if you lack the means to pay, your very bed will be snatched from under you.
28 Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set. Do not move an ancient boundary stone set up by your forefathers.
29 Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men. Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve before kings; he will not serve before obscure men.

Proverbs - Chapter 23

Verse King James Version New International Version Note
1 When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee: When you sit to dine with a ruler, note well what is before you,
2 And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite. and put a knife to your throat if you are given to gluttony.
3 Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat. Do not crave his delicacies, for that food is deceptive.
4 Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom. Do not wear yourself out to get rich; have the wisdom to show restraint.
5 Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven. Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle.
6 Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats: Do not eat the food of a stingy man, do not crave his delicacies;
7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee. for he is the kind of man who is always thinking about the cost. "Eat and drink," he says to you, but his heart is not with you.
8 The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words. You will vomit up the little you have eaten and will have wasted your compliments.
9 Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words. Do not speak to a fool, for he will scorn the wisdom of your words.
10 Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless: Do not move an ancient boundary stone or encroach on the fields of the fatherless,
11 For their redeemer is mighty; he shall plead their cause with thee. for their Defender is strong; he will take up their case against you.
12 Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge. Apply your heart to instruction and your ears to words of knowledge.
13 Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die. Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you punish him with the rod, he will not die.
14 Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell. Punish him with the rod and save his soul from death.
15 My son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine. My son, if your heart is wise, then my heart will be glad;
16 Yea, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things. my inmost being will rejoice when your lips speak what is right.
17 Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long. Do not let your heart envy sinners, but always be zealous for the fear of the LORD.
18 For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off. There is surely a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off.
19 Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way. Listen, my son, and be wise, and keep your heart on the right path.
20 Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh: Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat,
21 For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags. for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags.
22 Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old. Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.
23 Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding. Buy the truth and do not sell it; get wisdom, discipline and understanding.
24 The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him. The father of a righteous man has great joy; he who has a wise son delights in him.
25 Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice. May your father and mother be glad; may she who gave you birth rejoice!
26 My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways. My son, give me your heart and let your eyes keep to my ways,
27 For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit. for a prostitute is a deep pit and a wayward wife is a narrow well.
28 She also lieth in wait as for a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men. Like a bandit she lies in wait, and multiplies the unfaithful among men.
29 Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes?
30 They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine. Those who linger over wine, who go to sample bowls of mixed wine.
31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright. Do not gaze at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly!
32 At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder. In the end it bites like a snake and poisons like a viper.
33 Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things. Your eyes will see strange sights and your mind imagine confusing things.
34 Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast. You will be like one sleeping on the high seas, lying on top of the rigging.
35 They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again. "They hit me," you will say, "but I'm not hurt! They beat me, but I don't feel it! When will I wake up so I can find another drink?"

Proverbs - Chapter 24

Verse King James Version New International Version Note
1 Be not thou envious against evil men, neither desire to be with them. Do not envy wicked men, do not desire their company;
2 For their heart studieth destruction, and their lips talk of mischief. for their hearts plot violence, and their lips talk about making trouble.
3 Through wisdom is an house builded; and by understanding it is established: By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established;
4 And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches. through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.
5 A wise man is strong; yea, a man of knowledge increaseth strength. A wise man has great power, and a man of knowledge increases strength;
6 For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counsellors there is safety. for waging war you need guidance, and for victory many advisers.
7 Wisdom is too high for a fool: he openeth not his mouth in the gate. Wisdom is too high for a fool; in the assembly at the gate he has nothing to say.
8 He that deviseth to do evil shall be called a mischievous person. He who plots evil will be known as a schemer.
9 The thought of foolishness is sin: and the scorner is an abomination to men. The schemes of folly are sin, and men detest a mocker.
10 If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small. If you falter in times of trouble, how small is your strength!
11 If thou forbear to deliver them that are drawn unto death, and those that are ready to be slain; Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter.
12 If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not; doth not he that pondereth the heart consider it? and he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his works? If you say, "But we knew nothing about this," does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who guards your life know it? Will he not repay each person according to what he has done?
13 My son, eat thou honey, because it is good; and the honeycomb, which is sweet to thy taste: Eat honey, my son, for it is good; honey from the comb is sweet to your taste.
14 So shall the knowledge of wisdom be unto thy soul: when thou hast found it, then there shall be a reward, and thy expectation shall not be cut off. Know also that wisdom is sweet to your soul; if you find it, there is a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off.
15 Lay not wait, O wicked man, against the dwelling of the righteous; spoil not his resting place: Do not lie in wait like an outlaw against a righteous man's house, do not raid his dwelling place;
16 For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief. for though a righteous man falls seven times, he rises again, but the wicked are brought down by calamity.
17 Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth: Do not gloat when your enemy falls; when he stumbles, do not let your heart rejoice,
18 Lest the LORD see it, and it displease him, and he turn away his wrath from him. or the LORD will see and disapprove and turn his wrath away from him.
19 Fret not thyself because of evil men, neither be thou envious at the wicked: Do not fret because of evil men or be envious of the wicked,
20 For there shall be no reward to the evil man; the candle of the wicked shall be put out. for the evil man has no future hope, and the lamp of the wicked will be snuffed out.
21 My son, fear thou the LORD and the king: and meddle not with them that are given to change: Fear the LORD and the king, my son, and do not join with the rebellious,
22 For their calamity shall rise suddenly; and who knoweth the ruin of them both? for those two will send sudden destruction upon them, and who knows what calamities they can bring?
23 These things also belong to the wise. It is not good to have respect of persons in judgment. These also are sayings of the wise: To show partiality in judging is not good:
24 He that saith unto the wicked, Thou are righteous; him shall the people curse, nations shall abhor him: Whoever says to the guilty, "You are innocent"-- peoples will curse him and nations denounce him.
25 But to them that rebuke him shall be delight, and a good blessing shall come upon them. But it will go well with those who convict the guilty, and rich blessing will come upon them.
26 Every man shall kiss his lips that giveth a right answer. An honest answer is like a kiss on the lips.
27 Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for thyself in the field; and afterwards build thine house. Finish your outdoor work and get your fields ready; after that, build your house.
28 Be not a witness against thy neighbour without cause; and deceive not with thy lips. Do not testify against your neighbor without cause, or use your lips to deceive.
29 Say not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me: I will render to the man according to his work. Do not say, "I'll do to him as he has done to me; I'll pay that man back for what he did."
30 I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; I went past the field of the sluggard, past the vineyard of the man who lacks judgment;
31 And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall thereof was broken down. thorns had come up everywhere, the ground was covered with weeds, and the stone wall was in ruins.
32 Then I saw, and considered it well: I looked upon it, and received instruction. I applied my heart to what I observed and learned a lesson from what I saw:
33 Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest--
34 So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth; and thy want as an armed man. and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man.

Verse King James Version New International Version Note
1 These are also proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out. These are more proverbs of Solomon, copied by the men of Hezekiah king of Judah:
2 It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter. It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings.
3 The heaven for height, and the earth for depth, and the heart of kings is unsearchable. As the heavens are high and the earth is deep, so the hearts of kings are unsearchable.
4 Take away the dross from the silver, and there shall come forth a vessel for the finer. Remove the dross from the silver, and out comes material for the silversmith;
5 Take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne shall be established in righteousness. remove the wicked from the king's presence, and his throne will be established through righteousness.
6 Put not forth thyself in the presence of the king, and stand not in the place of great men: Do not exalt yourself in the king's presence, and do not claim a place among great men;
7 For better it is that it be said unto thee, Come up hither; than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince whom thine eyes have seen. it is better for him to say to you, "Come up here," than for him to humiliate you before a nobleman. What you have seen with your eyes
8 Go not forth hastily to strive, lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbour hath put thee to shame. do not bring hastily to court, for what will you do in the end if your neighbor puts you to shame?
9 Debate thy cause with thy neighbour himself; and discover not a secret to another: If you argue your case with a neighbor, do not betray another man's confidence,
10 Lest he that heareth it put thee to shame, and thine infamy turn not away. or he who hears it may shame you and you will never lose your bad reputation.
11 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver. A word aptly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.
12 As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear. Like an earring of gold or an ornament of fine gold is a wise man's rebuke to a listening ear.
13 As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, so is a faithful messenger to them that send him: for he refresheth the soul of his masters. Like the coolness of snow at harvest time is a trustworthy messenger to those who send him; he refreshes the spirit of his masters.
14 Whoso boasteth himself of a false gift is like clouds and wind without rain. Like clouds and wind without rain is a man who boasts of gifts he does not give.
15 By long forbearing is a prince persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh the bone. Through patience a ruler can be persuaded, and a gentle tongue can break a bone.
16 Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it. If you find honey, eat just enough-- too much of it, and you will vomit.
17 Withdraw thy foot from thy neighbour's house; lest he be weary of thee, and so hate thee. Seldom set foot in your neighbor's house-- too much of you, and he will hate you.
18 A man that beareth false witness against his neighbour is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow. Like a club or a sword or a sharp arrow is the man who gives false testimony against his neighbor.
19 Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble is like a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint. Like a bad tooth or a lame foot is reliance on the unfaithful in times of trouble.
20 As he that taketh away a garment in cold weather, and as vinegar upon nitre, so is he that singeth songs to an heavy heart. Like one who takes away a garment on a cold day, or like vinegar poured on soda, is one who sings songs to a heavy heart.
21 If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink: If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat; if he is thirsty, give him water to drink.
22 For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD shall reward thee. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head, and the LORD will reward you.
23 The north wind driveth away rain: so doth an angry countenance a backbiting tongue. As a north wind brings rain, so a sly tongue brings angry looks.
24 It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman and in a wide house. Better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife.
25 As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country. Like cold water to a weary soul is good news from a distant land.
26 A righteous man falling down before the wicked is as a troubled fountain, and a corrupt spring. Like a muddied spring or a polluted well is a righteous man who gives way to the wicked.
27 It is not good to eat much honey: so for men to search their own glory is not glory. It is not good to eat too much honey, nor is it honorable to seek one's own honor.
28 He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls. Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control.

2 As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come. Like a fluttering sparrow or a darting swallow, an undeserved curse does not come to rest.
3 A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the fool's back. A whip for the horse, a halter for the donkey, and a rod for the backs of fools!
4 Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him. Do not answer a fool according to his folly, or you will be like him yourself.
5 Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit. Answer a fool according to his folly, or he will be wise in his own eyes.
6 He that sendeth a message by the hand of a fool cutteth off the feet, and drinketh damage. Like cutting off one's feet or drinking violence is the sending of a message by the hand of a fool.
7 The legs of the lame are not equal: so is a parable in the mouth of fools. Like a lame man's legs that hang limp is a proverb in the mouth of a fool.
8 As he that bindeth a stone in a sling, so is he that giveth honour to a fool. Like tying a stone in a sling is the giving of honor to a fool.
9 As a thorn goeth up into the hand of a drunkard, so is a parable in the mouths of fools. Like a thornbush in a drunkard's hand is a proverb in the mouth of a fool.
10 The great God that formed all things both rewardeth the fool, and rewardeth transgressors. Like an archer who wounds at random is he who hires a fool or any passer-by.
11 As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly. As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats his folly.
12 Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him. Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.
13 The slothful man saith, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets. The sluggard says, "There is a lion in the road, a fierce lion roaming the streets!"
14 As the door turneth upon his hinges, so doth the slothful upon his bed. As a door turns on its hinges, so a sluggard turns on his bed.
15 The slothful hideth his hand in his bosom; it grieveth him to bring it again to his mouth. The sluggard buries his hand in the dish; he is too lazy to bring it back to his mouth.
16 The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason. The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes than seven men who answer discreetly.
17 He that passeth by, and meddleth with strife belonging not to him, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears. Like one who seizes a dog by the ears is a passer-by who meddles in a quarrel not his own.
18 As a mad man who casteth firebrands, arrows, and death, Like a madman shooting firebrands or deadly arrows
19 So is the man that deceiveth his neighbour, and saith, Am not I in sport? is a man who deceives his neighbor and says, "I was only joking!"
20 Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth. Without wood a fire goes out; without gossip a quarrel dies down.
21 As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife. As charcoal to embers and as wood to fire, so is a quarrelsome man for kindling strife.
22 The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly. The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to a man's inmost parts.
23 Burning lips and a wicked heart are like a potsherd covered with silver dross. Like a coating of glaze over earthenware are fervent lips with an evil heart.
24 He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him; A malicious man disguises himself with his lips, but in his heart he harbors deceit.
25 When he speaketh fair, believe him not: for there are seven abominations in his heart. Though his speech is charming, do not believe him, for seven abominations fill his heart.
26 Whose hatred is covered by deceit, his wickedness shall be shewed before the whole congregation. His malice may be concealed by deception, but his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly.
27 Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: and he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him. If a man digs a pit, he will fall into it; if a man rolls a stone, it will roll back on him.
28 A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin. A lying tongue hates those it hurts, and a flattering mouth works ruin.

Proverbs - Chapter 27

Verse King James Version New International Version Note
1 Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth. Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth.
2 Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips. Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; someone else, and not your own lips.
3 A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty; but a fool's wrath is heavier than them both. Stone is heavy and sand a burden, but provocation by a fool is heavier than both.
4 Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy? Anger is cruel and fury overwhelming, but who can stand before jealousy?
5 Open rebuke is better than secret love. Better is open rebuke than hidden love.
6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful. Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.
7 The full soul loatheth an honeycomb; but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet. He who is full loathes honey, but to the hungry even what is bitter tastes sweet.
8 As a bird that wandereth from her nest, so is a man that wandereth from his place. Like a bird that strays from its nest is a man who strays from his home.
9 Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man's friend by hearty counsel. Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart, and the pleasantness of one's friend springs from his earnest counsel.
10 Thine own friend, and thy father's friend, forsake not; neither go into thy brother's house in the day of thy calamity: for better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off. Do not forsake your friend and the friend of your father, and do not go to your brother's house when disaster strikes you-- better a neighbor nearby than a brother far away.
11 My son, be wise, and make my heart glad, that I may answer him that reproacheth me. Be wise, my son, and bring joy to my heart; then I can answer anyone who treats me with contempt.
12 A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the simple pass on, and are punished. The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it.
13 Take his garment that is surety for a stranger, and take a pledge of him for a strange woman. Take the garment of one who puts up security for a stranger; hold it in pledge if he does it for a wayward woman.
14 He that blesseth his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, it shall be counted a curse to him. If a man loudly blesses his neighbor early in the morning, it will be taken as a curse.
15 A continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike. A quarrelsome wife is like a constant dripping on a rainy day;
16 Whosoever hideth her hideth the wind, and the ointment of his right hand, which bewrayeth itself. restraining her is like restraining the wind or grasping oil with the hand.
17 Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend. As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.
18 Whoso keepeth the fig tree shall eat the fruit thereof: so he that waiteth on his master shall be honoured. He who tends a fig tree will eat its fruit, and he who looks after his master will be honored.
19 As in water face answereth to face, so the heart of man to man. As water reflects a face, so a man's heart reflects the man.
20 Hell and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied. Death and Destruction are never satisfied, and neither are the eyes of man.
21 As the fining pot for silver, and the furnace for gold; so is a man to his praise. The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but man is tested by the praise he receives.
22 Though thou shouldest bray a fool in a mortar among wheat with a pestle, yet will not his foolishness depart from him. Though you grind a fool in a mortar, grinding him like grain with a pestle, you will not remove his folly from him.
23 Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds. Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds;
24 For riches are not for ever: and doth the crown endure to every generation? for riches do not endure forever, and a crown is not secure for all generations.
25 The hay appeareth, and the tender grass sheweth itself, and herbs of the mountains are gathered. When the hay is removed and new growth appears and the grass from the hills is gathered in,
26 The lambs are for thy clothing, and the goats are the price of the field. the lambs will provide you with clothing, and the goats with the price of a field.
27 And thou shalt have goats' milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household, and for the maintenance for thy maidens. You will have plenty of goats' milk to feed you and your family and to nourish your servant girls.

Proverbs - Chapter 28

Verse King James Version New International Version Note
1 The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion. The wicked man flees though no one pursues, but the righteous are as bold as a lion.
2 For the transgression of a land many are the princes thereof: but by a man of understanding and knowledge the state thereof shall be prolonged. When a country is rebellious, it has many rulers, but a man of understanding and knowledge maintains order.
3 A poor man that oppresseth the poor is like a sweeping rain which leaveth no food. A ruler who oppresses the poor is like a driving rain that leaves no crops.
4 They that forsake the law praise the wicked: but such as keep the law contend with them. Those who forsake the law praise the wicked, but those who keep the law resist them.
5 Evil men understand not judgment: but they that seek the LORD understand all things. Evil men do not understand justice, but those who seek the LORD understand it fully.
6 Better is the poor that walketh in his uprightness, than he that is perverse in his ways, though he be rich. Better a poor man whose walk is blameless than a rich man whose ways are perverse.
7 Whoso keepeth the law is a wise son: but he that is a companion of riotous men shameth his father. He who keeps the law is a discerning son, but a companion of gluttons disgraces his father.
8 He that by usury and unjust gain increaseth his substance, he shall gather it for him that will pity the poor. He who increases his wealth by exorbitant interest amasses it for another, who will be kind to the poor.
9 He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination. If anyone turns a deaf ear to the law, even his prayers are detestable.
10 Whoso causeth the righteous to go astray in an evil way, he shall fall himself into his own pit: but the upright shall have good things in possession. He who leads the upright along an evil path will fall into his own trap, but the blameless will receive a good inheritance.
11 The rich man is wise in his own conceit; but the poor that hath understanding searcheth him out. A rich man may be wise in his own eyes, but a poor man who has discernment sees through him.
12 When righteous men do rejoice, there is great glory: but when the wicked rise, a man is hidden. When the righteous triumph, there is great elation; but when the wicked rise to power, men go into hiding.
13 He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy. He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.
14 Happy is the man that feareth alway: but he that hardeneth his heart shall fall into mischief. Blessed is the man who always fears the LORD, but he who hardens his heart falls into trouble.
15 As a roaring lion, and a ranging bear; so is a wicked ruler over the poor people. Like a roaring lion or a charging bear is a wicked man ruling over a helpless people.
16 The prince that wanteth understanding is also a great oppressor: but he that hateth covetousness shall prolong his days. A tyrannical ruler lacks judgment, but he who hates ill-gotten gain will enjoy a long life.
17 A man that doeth violence to the blood of any person shall flee to the pit; let no man stay him. A man tormented by the guilt of murder will be a fugitive till death; let no one support him.
18 Whoso walketh uprightly shall be saved: but he that is perverse in his ways shall fall at once. He whose walk is blameless is kept safe, but he whose ways are perverse will suddenly fall.
19 He that tilleth his land shall have plenty of bread: but he that followeth after vain persons shall have poverty enough. He who works his land will have abundant food, but the one who chases fantasies will have his fill of poverty.
20 A faithful man shall abound with blessings: but he that maketh haste to be rich shall not be innocent. A faithful man will be richly blessed, but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished.
21 To have respect of persons is not good: for for a piece of bread that man will transgress. To show partiality is not good-- yet a man will do wrong for a piece of bread.
22 He that hasteth to be rich hath an evil eye, and considereth not that poverty shall come upon him. A stingy man is eager to get rich and is unaware that poverty awaits him.
23 He that rebuketh a man afterwards shall find more favour than he that flattereth with the tongue. He who rebukes a man will in the end gain more favor than he who has a flattering tongue.
24 Whoso robbeth his father or his mother, and saith, It is no transgression; the same is the companion of a destroyer. He who robs his father or mother and says, "It's not wrong"-- he is partner to him who destroys.
25 He that is of a proud heart stirreth up strife: but he that putteth his trust in the LORD shall be made fat. A greedy man stirs up dissension, but he who trusts in the LORD will prosper.
26 He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered. He who trusts in himself is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom is kept safe.
27 He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse. He who gives to the poor will lack nothing, but he who closes his eyes to them receives many curses.
28 When the wicked rise, men hide themselves: but when they perish, the righteous increase. When the wicked rise to power, people go into hiding; but when the wicked perish, the righteous thrive.

Proverbs - Chapter 29

Verse King James Version New International Version Note
1 He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy. A man who remains stiff-necked after many rebukes will suddenly be destroyed--without remedy.
2 When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn. When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice; when the wicked rule, the people groan.
3 Whoso loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father: but he that keepeth company with harlots spendeth his substance. A man who loves wisdom brings joy to his father, but a companion of prostitutes squanders his wealth.
4 The king by judgment establisheth the land: but he that receiveth gifts overthroweth it. By justice a king gives a country stability, but one who is greedy for bribes tears it down.
5 A man that flattereth his neighbour spreadeth a net for his feet. Whoever flatters his neighbor is spreading a net for his feet.
6 In the transgression of an evil man there is a snare: but the righteous doth sing and rejoice. An evil man is snared by his own sin, but a righteous one can sing and be glad.
7 The righteous considereth the cause of the poor: but the wicked regardeth not to know it. The righteous care about justice for the poor, but the wicked have no such concern.
8 Scornful men bring a city into a snare: but wise men turn away wrath. Mockers stir up a city, but wise men turn away anger.
9 If a wise man contendeth with a foolish man, whether he rage or laugh, there is no rest. If a wise man goes to court with a fool, the fool rages and scoffs, and there is no peace.
10 The bloodthirsty hate the upright: but the just seek his soul. Bloodthirsty men hate a man of integrity and seek to kill the upright.
11 A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards. A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control.
12 If a ruler hearken to lies, all his servants are wicked. If a ruler listens to lies, all his officials become wicked.
13 The poor and the deceitful man meet together: the LORD lighteneth both their eyes. The poor man and the oppressor have this in common: The LORD gives sight to the eyes of both.
14 The king that faithfully judgeth the poor, his throne shall be established for ever. If a king judges the poor with fairness, his throne will always be secure.
15 The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame. The rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a child left to himself disgraces his mother.
16 When the wicked are multiplied, transgression increaseth: but the righteous shall see their fall. When the wicked thrive, so does sin, but the righteous will see their downfall.
17 Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest; yea, he shall give delight unto thy soul. Discipline your son, and he will give you peace; he will bring delight to your soul.
18 Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he. Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but blessed is he who keeps the law.
19 A servant will not be corrected by words: for though he understand he will not answer. A servant cannot be corrected by mere words; though he understands, he will not respond.
20 Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope of a fool than of him. Do you see a man who speaks in haste? There is more hope for a fool than for him.
21 He that delicately bringeth up his servant from a child shall have him become his son at the length. If a man pampers his servant from youth, he will bring grief in the end.
22 An angry man stirreth up strife, and a furious man aboundeth in transgression. An angry man stirs up dissension, and a hot-tempered one commits many sins.
23 A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit. A man's pride brings him low, but a man of lowly spirit gains honor.
24 Whoso is partner with a thief hateth his own soul: he heareth cursing, and bewrayeth it not. The accomplice of a thief is his own enemy; he is put under oath and dare not testify.
25 The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe. Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe.
26 Many seek the ruler's favour; but every man's judgment cometh from the LORD. Many seek an audience with a ruler, but it is from the LORD that man gets justice.
27 An unjust man is an abomination to the just: and he that is upright in the way is abomination to the wicked. The righteous detest the dishonest; the wicked detest the upright.

Proverbs - Chapter 30

Verse King James Version New International Version Note
1 The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, even the prophecy: the man spake unto Ithiel, even unto Ithiel and Ucal, The sayings of Agur son of Jakeh--an oracle : This man declared to Ithiel, to Ithiel and to Ucal:
2 Surely I am more brutish than any man, and have not the understanding of a man. "I am the most ignorant of men; I do not have a man's understanding.
3 I neither learned wisdom, nor have the knowledge of the holy. I have not learned wisdom, nor have I knowledge of the Holy One.
4 Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son's name, if thou canst tell? Who has gone up to heaven and come down? Who has gathered up the wind in the hollow of his hands? Who has wrapped up the waters in his cloak? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and the name of his son? Tell me if you know!
5 Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. "Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.
6 Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar. Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar.
7 Two things have I required of thee; deny me them not before I die: "Two things I ask of you, O LORD; do not refuse me before I die:
8 Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me: Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread.
9 Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, `Who is the LORD?' Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.
10 Accuse not a servant unto his master, lest he curse thee, and thou be found guilty. "Do not slander a servant to his master, or he will curse you, and you will pay for it.
11 There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother. "There are those who curse their fathers and do not bless their mothers;
12 There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness. those who are pure in their own eyes and yet are not cleansed of their filth;
13 There is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up. those whose eyes are ever so haughty, whose glances are so disdainful;
14 There is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and their jaw teeth as knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men. those whose teeth are swords and whose jaws are set with knives to devour the poor from the earth, the needy from among mankind.
15 The horseleach hath two daughters, crying, Give, give. There are three things that are never satisfied, yea, four things say not, It is enough: "The leech has two daughters. `Give! Give!' they cry. "There are three things that are never satisfied, four that never say, `Enough!':
16 The grave; and the barren womb; the earth that is not filled with water; and the fire that saith not, It is enough. the grave, the barren womb, land, which is never satisfied with water, and fire, which never says, `Enough!'
17 The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it. "The eye that mocks a father, that scorns obedience to a mother, will be pecked out by the ravens of the valley, will be eaten by the vultures.
18 There be three things which are too wonderful for me, yea, four which I know not: "There are three things that are too amazing for me, four that I do not understand:
19 The way of an eagle in the air; the way of a serpent upon a rock; the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man with a maid. the way of an eagle in the sky, the way of a snake on a rock, the way of a ship on the high seas, and the way of a man with a maiden.
20 Such is the way of an adulterous woman; she eateth, and wipeth her mouth, and saith, I have done no wickedness. "This is the way of an adulteress: She eats and wipes her mouth and says, `I've done nothing wrong.'
21 For three things the earth is disquieted, and for four which it cannot bear: "Under three things the earth trembles, under four it cannot bear up:
22 For a servant when he reigneth; and a fool when he is filled with meat; a servant who becomes king, a fool who is full of food,
23 For an odious woman when she is married; and an handmaid that is heir to her mistress. an unloved woman who is married, and a maidservant who displaces her mistress.
24 There be four things which are little upon the earth, but they are exceeding wise: "Four things on earth are small, yet they are extremely wise:
25 The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their meat in the summer; Ants are creatures of little strength, yet they store up their food in the summer;
26 The conies are but a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks; coneys are creatures of little power, yet they make their home in the crags;
27 The locusts have no king, yet go they forth all of them by bands; locusts have no king, yet they advance together in ranks;
28 The spider taketh hold with her hands, and is in kings' palaces. a lizard can be caught with the hand, yet it is found in kings' palaces.
29 There be three things which go well, yea, four are comely in going: "There are three things that are stately in their stride, four that move with stately bearing:
30 A lion which is strongest among beasts, and turneth not away for any; a lion, mighty among beasts, who retreats before nothing;
31 A greyhound; an he goat also; and a king, against whom there is no rising up. a strutting rooster, a he-goat, and a king with his army around him.
32 If thou hast done foolishly in lifting up thyself, or if thou hast thought evil, lay thine hand upon thy mouth. "If you have played the fool and exalted yourself, or if you have planned evil, clap your hand over your mouth!
33 Surely the churning of milk bringeth forth butter, and the wringing of the nose bringeth forth blood: so the forcing of wrath bringeth forth strife. For as churning the milk produces butter, and as twisting the nose produces blood, so stirring up anger produces strife."

Proverbs - Chapter 31

Verse King James Version New International Version Note
1 The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him. The sayings of King Lemuel--an oracle his mother taught him:
2 What, my son? and what, the son of my womb? and what, the son of my vows? "O my son, O son of my womb, O son of my vows,
3 Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings. do not spend your strength on women, your vigor on those who ruin kings.
4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink: "It is not for kings, O Lemuel-- not for kings to drink wine, not for rulers to crave beer,
5 Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted. lest they drink and forget what the law decrees, and deprive all the oppressed of their rights.
6 Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts. Give beer to those who are perishing, wine to those who are in anguish;
7 Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more. let them drink and forget their poverty and remember their misery no more.
8 Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction. "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.
9 Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy."
10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.
11 The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value.
12 She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.
13 She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands. She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands.
14 She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar. She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar.
15 She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens. She gets up while it is still dark; she provides food for her family and portions for her servant girls.
16 She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard. She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.
17 She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms. She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks.
18 She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night. She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night.
19 She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff. In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers.
20 She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.
21 She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet. When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet.
22 She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple. She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple.
23 Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land. Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.
24 She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant. She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes.
25 Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.
26 She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
27 She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.
28 Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her:
29 Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. "Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all."
30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised. Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.
31 Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates. Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.
