19	Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.	Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.
20	But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.	But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

22	Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,	All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:

10	And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.	The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.
11	I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance. but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:	"I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
12	Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.	His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire."

But anyone who says, `You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell.
23	Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;	"Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you,
24	Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.	leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift.
25	Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.	"Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still with him on the way, or he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison.
26	Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.	I tell you the truth, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.

46	For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?	If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that?

10	When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.	When Jesus heard this, he was astonished and said to those following him, "I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.
11	And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.	I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.
12	But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.	But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

16	When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick:	When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick.
17	That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.	This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: "He took up our infirmities and carried our diseases."
18	Now when Jesus saw great multitudes about him, he gave commandment to depart unto the other side.	When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake.

26	And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.	He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.
27	But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!	The men were amazed and asked, "What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!"
28	And when he was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way.	When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way.
29	And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time?	"What do you want with us, Son of God?" they shouted. "Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?"
30	And there was a good way off from them an herd of many swine feeding.	Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding.
31	So the devils besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine.	The demons begged Jesus, "If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs."
32	And he said unto them, Go. And when they were come out, they went into the herd of swine: and, behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished in the waters.	He said to them, "Go!" So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water.
33	And they that kept them fled, and went their ways into the city, and told every thing, and what was befallen to the possessed of the devils.	Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men.
34	And, behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus: and when they saw him, they besought him that he would depart out of their coasts.	Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region.

9	And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him.	As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector's booth. "Follow me," he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.
10	And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples.	While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew's house, many tax collectors and "sinners" came and ate with him and his disciples.
11	And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners?	When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and `sinners'?"
12	But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick.	On hearing this, Jesus said, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.
13	But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.	But go and learn what this means: `I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."
14	Then came to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not?	Then John's disciples came and asked him, "How is it that we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?"
15	And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast.	Jesus answered, "How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.
16	No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse.	"No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse.
17	Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved.	Neither do men pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst, the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved."
18	While he spake these things unto them, behold, there came a certain ruler, and worshipped him, saying, My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live.	While he was saying this, a ruler came and knelt before him and said, "My daughter has just died. But come and put your hand on her, and she will live."
19	And Jesus arose, and followed him, and so did his disciples.	Jesus got up and went with him, and so did his disciples.
20	And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment:	Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak.
21	For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole.	She said to herself, "If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed."
22	But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.	Jesus turned and saw her. "Take heart, daughter," he said, "your faith has healed you." And the woman was healed from that moment.
23	And when Jesus came into the ruler's house, and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise,	When Jesus entered the ruler's house and saw the flute players and the noisy crowd,
24	He said unto them, Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn.	he said, "Go away. The girl is not dead but asleep." But they laughed at him.
25	But when the people were put forth, he went in, and took her by the hand, and the maid arose.	After the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took the girl by the hand, and she got up.
26	And the fame hereof went abroad into all that land.	News of this spread through all that region.
27	And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou son of David, have mercy on us.	As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, calling out, "Have mercy on us, Son of David!"
28	And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord.	When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?" "Yes, Lord," they replied.
29	Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.	Then he touched their eyes and said, "According to your faith will it be done to you";
30	And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straitly charged them, saying, See that no man know it.	and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly, "See that no one knows about this."
31	But they, when they were departed, spread abroad his fame in all that country.	But they went out and spread the news about him all over that region.
32	As they went out, behold, they brought to him a dumb man possessed with a devil.	While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed and could not talk was brought to Jesus.
33	And when the devil was cast out, the dumb spake: and the multitudes marvelled, saying, It was never so seen in Israel.	And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, "Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel."
34	But the Pharisees said, He casteth out devils through the prince of the devils.	But the Pharisees said, "It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons."
35	And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. 26	Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.	"So do not be afraid of them. There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.
27	What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops.	What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs.
28	And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.	Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
29	Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.	Are not two sparrows sold for a penny ? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father.

31	Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.	So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

As John's disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: "What did you go out into the desert to see? A reed swayed by the wind?
8	But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses.	If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings' palaces.
9	But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.	Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
10	For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.	This is the one about whom it is written: "`I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.'
11	Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 20	Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not:	Then Jesus began to denounce the cities in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent.
21	Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.	"Woe to you, Korazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
22	But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.	But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.
23	And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.	And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to the skies? No, you will go down to the depths. If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day.
24	But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.	But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you."
25	At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. 26	Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.	Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.
27	All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him. 3	But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him;	He answered, "Haven't you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?
4	How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests?	He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread--which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests.
5	Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless?	Or haven't you read in the Law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple desecrate the day and yet are innocent?
6	But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple.	I tell you that one greater than the temple is here.
7	But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.	If you had known what these words mean, `I desire mercy, not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned the innocent.
8	For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day.	For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath."
9	And when he was departed thence, he went into their synagogue:	Going on from that place, he went into their synagogue,
10	And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him.	and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, they asked him, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?"
11	And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out?	He said to them, "If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out?
12	How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days.	How much more valuable is a man than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath."
13	Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, like as the other.	Then he said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." So he stretched it out and it was completely restored, just as sound as the other.
14	Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him.	But the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus.
15	But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all;	Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. Many followed him, and he healed all their sick,
16	And charged them that they should not make him known:	warning them not to tell who he was.
17	That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,	This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:
18	Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles. 24	But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.	But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, "It is only by Beelzebub, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons."
25	And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:	Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand.
26	And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand?	If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand?
27	And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges.	And if I drive out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your people drive them out? So then, they will be your judges.
28	But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you.	But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
29	Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house.	"Or again, how can anyone enter a strong man's house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can rob his house.
30	He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.	"He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters.
31	Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.	And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.
32	And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.	Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.
33	Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit.	"Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit.
34	O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.	You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.
35	A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.	The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him.
36	But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.	But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken.
37	For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.	For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned."
38	Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee.	Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, "Teacher, we want to see a miraculous sign from you."
39	But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas:	He answered, "A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.
40	For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.	For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
41	The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.	The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah is here.
42	The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.	The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom, and now one greater than Solomon is here.
43	When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none.	"When an evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it.
44	Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished.	Then it says, `I will return to the house I left.' When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order.
45	Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.	Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation."
46	While he yet talked to the people, behold, his mother and his brethren stood without, desiring to speak with him.	While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him.
47	Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee.	Someone told him, "Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you."
48	But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren?	He replied to him, "Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?"
49	And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!	Pointing to his disciples, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers.
50	For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.	For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother."

5	Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth:	Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow.
6	And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.	But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root.
7	And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them:	Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants.

11	He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.	He replied, "The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them.
12	For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.	Whoever has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him.
13	Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.	This is why I speak to them in parables: "Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand.
14	And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:	In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah: "`You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.

18	Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower.	"Listen then to what the parable of the sower means:
19	When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.	When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path.
20	But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it;	The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy.
21	Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.	But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away.
22	He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.	The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful.
23	But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. 25	But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.	But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away.
26	But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also.	When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.
27	So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares?	"The owner's servants came to him and said, `Sir, didn't you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?'
28	He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?	"`An enemy did this,' he replied. "The servants asked him, `Do you want us to go and pull them up?'

32	Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.	Though it is the smallest of all your seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and perch in its branches."
33	Another parable spake he unto them; The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.	He told them still another parable: "The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into a large amount of flour until it worked all through the dough."

54	And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works?	Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed. "Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?" they asked.
55	Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas?	"Isn't this the carpenter's son? Isn't his mother's name Mary, and aren't his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas?
56	And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things?	Aren't all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?"
57	And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house.	And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, "Only in his hometown and in his own house is a prophet without honor."
58	And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.	And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith.

6	But when Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod.	On Herod's birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for them and pleased Herod so much
7	Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask.	that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.

13	When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities. 14	And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.	When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
15	And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals.	As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a remote place, and it's already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food."
16	But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat.	Jesus replied, "They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat."
17	And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.	"We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish," they answered.
18	He said, Bring them hither to me.	"Bring them here to me," he said.
19	And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.	And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.
20	And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.	They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
21	And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.	The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.
22	And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.	Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd.
23	And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.	After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone,
24	But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.	but the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
25	And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.	During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake.
26	And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.	When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear.
27	But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.	But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."
28	And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.	"Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water."
29	And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.	"Come," he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.
30	But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.	But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!"
31	And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?	Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?"
32	And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.	And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down.
33	Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.	Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."
34	And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret.	When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret.

4	For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.	For God said, `Honor your father and mother' and `Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.'
5	But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me;	But you say that if a man says to his father or mother, `Whatever help you might otherwise have received from me is a gift devoted to God,'
6	And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.	he is not to `honor his father ' with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.
7	Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying,	You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:
8	This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.	"`These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.
9	But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.	They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.' "
10	And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand:	Jesus called the crowd to him and said, "Listen and understand.
11	Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.	What goes into a man's mouth does not make him `unclean,' but what comes out of his mouth, that is what makes him `unclean.'"
12	Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying?	Then the disciples came to him and asked, "Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?"
13	But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up.	He replied, "Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots.
14	Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.	Leave them; they are blind guides. If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit."
15	Then answered Peter and said unto him, Declare unto us this parable.	Peter said, "Explain the parable to us."

18	But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.	But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man `unclean.'
19	For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:	For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.
20	These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.	These are what make a man `unclean'; but eating with unwashed hands does not make him `unclean.'"

22	And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil.	A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is suffering terribly from demon-possession."
23	But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us.	Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, "Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us."
24	But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.	He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel."
25	Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me.	The woman came and knelt before him. "Lord, help me!" she said.
26	But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs.	He replied, "It is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to their dogs."
27	And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table.	"Yes, Lord," she said, "but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table."
28	Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.	Then Jesus answered, "Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted." And her daughter was healed from that very hour.
29	And Jesus departed from thence, and came nigh unto the sea of Galilee; and went up into a mountain, and sat down there.	Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a mountainside and sat down.
30	And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus' feet; and he healed them:	Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet; and he healed them.
31	Insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel.	The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel.
32	Then Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way.	Jesus called his disciples to him and said, "I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way."
33	And his disciples say unto him, Whence should we have so much bread in the wilderness, as to fill so great a multitude?	His disciples answered, "Where could we get enough bread in this remote place to feed such a crowd?"
34	And Jesus saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven, and a few little fishes.	"How many loaves do you have?" Jesus asked. "Seven," they replied, "and a few small fish."
35	And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground.	He told the crowd to sit down on the ground.
36	And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.	Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, and when he had given thanks, he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and they in turn to the people.
37	And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets full.	They all ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
38	And they that did eat were four thousand men, beside women and children.	The number of those who ate was four thousand, besides women and children.
39	And he sent away the multitude, and took ship, and came into the coasts of Magdala.	After Jesus had sent the crowd away, he got into the boat and went to the vicinity of Magadan.

Matthew - Chapter 16

3	And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowering. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?	and in the morning, `Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.' You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.
4	A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed.	A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a miraculous sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah." Jesus then left them and went away.
5	And when his disciples were come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread.	When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread.
6	Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.	"Be careful," Jesus said to them. "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."
7	And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have taken no bread.	They discussed this among themselves and said, "It is because we didn't bring any bread."
8	Which when Jesus perceived, he said unto them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread?	Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, "You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread?
9	Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?	Do you still not understand? Don't you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?
10	Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?	Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?
11	How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees?	How is it you don't understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."
12	Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.	Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
13	When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?	When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?"
14	And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.	They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets."

18	And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.	And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.

23	But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.	Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men."
24	Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.	Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
25	For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.	For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it.
26	For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?	What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?

9	And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead.	As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, "Don't tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead."
10	And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come?	The disciples asked him, "Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?"
11	And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.	Jesus replied, "To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things.
12	But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.	But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands."
13	Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.	Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist.
14	And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying,	When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him.
15	Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water.	"Lord, have mercy on my son," he said. "He has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water.
16	And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him.	I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him."
17	Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me.	"O unbelieving and perverse generation," Jesus replied, "how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me."
18	And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.	Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed from that moment.
19	Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out?	Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, "Why couldn't we drive it out?"
20	And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.	He replied, "Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, `Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you. "

And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers?	"Yes, he does," he replied. When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak. "What do you think, Simon?" he asked. "From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes--from their own sons or from others?"
26	Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free.	"From others," Peter answered. "Then the sons are exempt," Jesus said to him.
27	Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.	"But so that we may not offend them, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. 8	Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.	If your hand or your foot causes you to sin cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire.
9	And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire.	And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.
10	Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.	"See that you do not look down on one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.

27	Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt.	The servant's master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go.
28	But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest.	"But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii. He grabbed him and began to choke him. `Pay back what you owe me!' he demanded.
29	And his fellowservant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.	"His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, `Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.'
30	And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt.	"But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt.
31	So when his fellowservants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done.	When the other servants saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed and went and told their master everything that had happened.
32	Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me:	"Then the master called the servant in. `You wicked servant,' he said, `I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to.
33	Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee?	Shouldn't you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?'
34	And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him.	In anger his master turned him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.
35	So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.	"This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother from your heart."

3	The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?	Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?"
4	And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,	"Haven't you read," he replied, "that at the beginning the Creator `made them male and female,'
5	And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?	and said, `For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh' ?
6	Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.	So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate."
7	They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?	"Why then," they asked, "did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?"
8	He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.	Jesus replied, "Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning.
9	And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.	I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery."
10	His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry.	The disciples said to him, "If this is the situation between a husband and wife, it is better not to marry."
11	But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given.	Jesus replied, "Not everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom it has been given.
12	For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.	For some are eunuchs because they were born that way; others were made that way by men; and others have renounced marriage because of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it."
13	Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them.	Then little children were brought to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked those who brought them.
14	But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.	Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."
15	And he laid his hands on them, and departed thence.	When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there.
16	And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?	Now a man came up to Jesus and asked, "Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?"
17	And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.	"Why do you ask me about what is good?" Jesus replied. "There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the commandments."
18	He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,	"Which ones?" the man inquired. Jesus replied, "`Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony,
19	Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.	honor your father and mother,' and `love your neighbor as yourself.' "
20	The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?	"All these I have kept," the young man said. "What do I still lack?"
21	Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.	Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."
22	But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.	When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.
23	Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven.	Then Jesus said to his disciples, "I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.
24	And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.	Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."
25	When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved?	When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, "Who then can be saved?"
26	But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.	Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."
27	Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore?	Peter answered him, "We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?"
28	And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.	Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
29	And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life.	And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.
30	But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first.	But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.

7	They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive.	"`Because no one has hired us,' they answered. "He said to them, `You also go and work in my vineyard.'
8	So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first.	"When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, `Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.'
9	And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny.	"The workers who were hired about the eleventh hour came and each received a denarius.
10	But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny.	So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius.
11	And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house,	When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner.
12	Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day.	`These men who were hired last worked only one hour,' they said, `and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.'
13	But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny?	"But he answered one of them, `Friend, I am not being unfair to you. Didn't you agree to work for a denarius?

Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, `Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and it will be done.

23	And when he was come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority? "And who gave you this authority?"

25	The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or of men? And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say unto us, Why did ye not then believe him?	John's baptism--where did it come from? Was it from heaven, or from men?" They discussed it among themselves and said, "If we say, `From heaven,' he will ask, `Then why didn't you believe him?'
26	But if we shall say, Of men; we fear the people; for all hold John as a prophet.	But if we say, `From men'--we are afraid of the people, for they all hold that John was a prophet."
27	And they answered Jesus, and said, We cannot tell. And he said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.	So they answered Jesus, "We don't know." Then he said, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.
28	But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard.	"What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, `Son, go and work today in the vineyard.'
29	He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went.	"`I will not,' he answered, but later he changed his mind and went.

He put a wall around it, dug a winepress in it and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and went away on a journey.
34	And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it.	When the harvest time approached, he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his fruit.
35	And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another.	"The tenants seized his servants; they beat one, killed another, and stoned a third.
36	Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they did unto them likewise.	Then he sent other servants to them, more than the first time, and the tenants treated them the same way.
37	But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son.	Last of all, he sent his son to them. `They will respect my son,' he said.
38	But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance.	"But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other, `This is the heir. Come, let's kill him and take his inheritance.'
39	And they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him.	So they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.

42	Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?	Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the Scriptures: "`The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone ; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes' ?
43	Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.	"Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit.
44	And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.	He who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces, but he on whom it falls will be crushed." 1
45	And when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables, they perceived that he spake of them.	When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard Jesus' parables, they knew he was talking about them.
46	But when they sought to lay hands on him, they feared the multitude, because they took him for a prophet.	They looked for a way to arrest him, but they were afraid of the crowd because the people held that he was a prophet.

4	Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage.	"Then he sent some more servants and said, `Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner: My oxen and fattened cattle have been butchered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.'
5	But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise:	"But they paid no attention and went off--one to his field, another to his business.
6	And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them.	The rest seized his servants, mistreated them and killed them.
7	But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city.	The king was enraged. He sent his army and destroyed those murderers and burned their city.
8	Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy.	"Then he said to his servants, `The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited did not deserve to come.
9	Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage.	Go to the street corners and invite to the banquet anyone you find.'
10	So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests. 13	Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness, there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.	"Then the king told the attendants, `Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'
14	For many are called, but few are chosen.	"For many are invited, but few are chosen."
15	Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk.	Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words.
16	And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men.	They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. "Teacher," they said, "we know you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren't swayed by men, because you pay no attention to who they are.
17	Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?	Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?"
18	But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?	But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, "You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me?
19	Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny.	Show me the coin used for paying the tax." They brought him a denarius,
20	And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription?	and he asked them, "Whose portrait is this? And whose inscription?"

28	Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her.	Now then, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven, since all of them were married to her?"
29	Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.	Jesus replied, "You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.
30	For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.	At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.
31	But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying,	But about the resurrection of the dead--have you not read what God said to you,
32	I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.	`I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob' ? He is not the God of the dead but of the living."
33	And when the multitude heard this, they were astonished at his doctrine.	When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching.
34	But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together.	Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together.
35	Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,	One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question:
36	Master, which is the great commandment in the law?	"Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?"
37	Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.	Jesus replied: "`Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'
38	This is the first and great commandment.	This is the first and greatest commandment.
39	And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.	And the second is like it: `Love your neighbor as yourself.'
40	On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.	All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."

46	And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.	No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions.

As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. "Tell us," they said, "when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?"
4	And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.	Jesus answered: "Watch out that no one deceives you.
5	For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.	For many will come in my name, claiming, `I am the Christ, ' and will deceive many.
6	And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.	You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.
7	For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.	Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places.
8	All these are the beginning of sorrows.	All these are the beginning of birth pains.

20	But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:	Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath.
21	For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.	For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now--and never to be equaled again.
22	And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.	If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened.

43	But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.	But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into.
44	Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.	So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.
45	Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season?	"Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time?
46	Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.	It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns.
47	Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods.	I tell you the truth, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.
48	But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming;	But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, `My master is staying away a long time,'
49	And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken;	and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards.
50	The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of,	The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of.
51	And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.	He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

10	And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut.	"But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.
11	Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.	"Later the others also came. `Sir! Sir!' they said. `Open the door for us!'
12	But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.	"But he replied, `I tell you the truth, I don't know you.'
13	Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.	"Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.
14	For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods.	"Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them.

37	Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?	"Then the righteous will answer him, `Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?
38	When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?	When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you?
39	Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?	When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?'
40	And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.	"The King will reply, `I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'
41	Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:	"Then he will say to those on his left, `Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

9	For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor.	"This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor."
10	When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me.	Aware of this, Jesus said to them, "Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me.
11	For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always.	The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have me.
12	For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial.	When she poured this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial.
13	Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her.	I tell you the truth, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her."
14	Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests,	Then one of the Twelve--the one called Judas Iscariot--went to the chief priests
15	And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.	and asked, "What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?" So they counted out for him thirty silver coins.

18	And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at thy house with my disciples.	He replied, "Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, `The Teacher says: My appointed time is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.'"
19	And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the passover.	So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover.
20	Now when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve.	When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve.
21	And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.	And while they were eating, he said, "I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me."
22	And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I?	They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, "Surely not I, Lord?"
23	And he answered and said, He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me.	Jesus replied, "The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me.
24	The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born.	The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born."
25	Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said.	Then Judas, the one who would betray him, said, "Surely not I, Rabbi?" Jesus answered, "Yes, it is you."

34	Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.	"I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times."
35	Peter said unto him, Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee. Likewise also said all the disciples.	But Peter declared, "Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you." And all the other disciples said the same.
36	Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder.	Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, "Sit here while I go over there and pray."

42	He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.	He went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done."
43	And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy.	When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy.
44	And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.	So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.
45	Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.	Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

48	Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast.	Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: "The one I kiss is the man; arrest him."
49	And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him.	Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, "Greetings, Rabbi!" and kissed him.

51	And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest's, and smote off his ear.	With that, one of Jesus' companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
52	Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.	"Put your sword back in its place," Jesus said to him, "for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.
53	Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?	Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?
54	But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?	But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?"
55	In that same hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against a thief with swords and staves for to take me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on me.	At that time Jesus said to the crowd, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching, and you did not arrest me.
56	But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.	But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled." Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.
57	And they that had laid hold on Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled.	Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled.
58	But Peter followed him afar off unto the high priest's palace, and went in, and sat with the servants, to see the end.	But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down with the guards to see the outcome.
59	Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death;	The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death.
60	But found none: yea, though many false witnesses came, yet found they none. At the last came two false witnesses,	But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward
61	And said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.	and declared, "This fellow said, `I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.'"
62	And the high priest arose, and said unto him, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?	Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, "Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?"
63	But Jesus held his peace, And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God.	But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him, "I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God."
64	Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.	"Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied. "But I say to all of you: In the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven."
65	Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy.	Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, "He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy.
66	What think ye? They answered and said, He is guilty of death.	What do you think?" "He is worthy of death," they answered.
67	Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him; and others smote him with the palms of their hands,	Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists. Others slapped him

71	And when he was gone out into the porch, another maid saw him, and said unto them that were there, This fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth.	Then he went out to the gateway, where another girl saw him and said to the people there, "This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth."
72	And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man.	He denied it again, with an oath: "I don't know the man!"
73	And after a while came unto him they that stood by, and said to Peter, Surely thou also art one of them; for thy speech bewrayeth thee.	After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, "Surely you are one of them, for your accent gives you away."
74	Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew.	Then he began to call down curses on himself and he swore to them, "I don't know the man!" Immediately a rooster crowed.
75	And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly.	Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: "Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times." And he went outside and wept bitterly.

3	Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,	When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and the elders.
4	Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that.	"I have sinned," he said, "for I have betrayed innocent blood." "What is that to us?" they replied. "That's your responsibility."
5	And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.	So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.
6	And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood.	The chief priests picked up the coins and said, "It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money."
7	And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in.	So they decided to use the money to buy the potter's field as a burial place for foreigners.
8	Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day.	That is why it has been called the Field of Blood to this day.
9	Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value;	Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: "They took the thirty silver coins, the price set on him by the people of Israel,
10	And gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me.	and they used them to buy the potter's field, as the Lord commanded me."
11	And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest.	Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" "Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied.
12	And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.	When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer.
13	Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee?	Then Pilate asked him, "Don't you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?"
14	And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.	But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge--to the great amazement of the governor.
15	Now at that feast the governor was wont to release unto the people a prisoner, whom they would.	Now it was the governor's custom at the Feast to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd.
16	And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.	At that time they had a notorious prisoner, called Barabbas.
17	Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ?	So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, "Which one do you want me to release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?"
18	For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.	For he knew it was out of envy that they had handed Jesus over to him.
19	When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.	While Pilate was sitting on the judge's seat, his wife sent him this message: "Don't have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him."
20	But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.	But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.
21	The governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas.	"Which of the two do you want me to release to you?" asked the governor. "Barabbas," they answered.
22	Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified.	"What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?" Pilate asked. They all answered, "Crucify him!"
23	And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.	"Why? What crime has he committed?" asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, "Crucify him!"
24	When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.	When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. "I am innocent of this man's blood," he said. "It is your responsibility!"

48	And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.	Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a stick, and offered it to Jesus to drink.
49	The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him.	The rest said, "Now leave him alone. Let's see if Elijah comes to save him."
50	Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.	And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.
51	And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;	At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split.
52	And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,	The tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life.
53	And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.	They came out of the tombs, and after Jesus' resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many people.
54	Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.	When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, "Surely he was the Son of God!"
55	And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him:	Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs.
56	Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedees children.	Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's sons.
57	When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple:	As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus.
58	He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.	Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus' body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him.

62	Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate,	The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate.
63	Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.	"Sir," they said, "we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, `After three days I will rise again.'
64	Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.	So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body and tell the people that he has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first."
65	Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can.	"Take a guard," Pilate answered. "Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how."
66	So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.	So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard.

Matthew - Chapter 28

1	In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.	After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.
2	And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.	There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it.
3	His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:	His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow.
4	And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.	The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.
5	And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.	The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.
6	He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.	He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.
7	And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.	Then go quickly and tell his disciples: `He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.' Now I have told you."
8	And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word.	So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples.
9	And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.	Suddenly Jesus met them. "Greetings," he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him.
10	Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.	Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me."
11	Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and shewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done.	While the women were on their way, some of the guards went into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had happened.
12	And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers,	When the chief priests had met with the elders and devised a plan, they gave the soldiers a large sum of money,
13	Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept.	telling them, "You are to say, `His disciples came during the night and stole him away while we were asleep.'
14	And if this come to the governor's ears, we will persuade him, and secure you.	If this report gets to the governor, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble."
15	So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.	So the soldiers took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story has been widely circulated among the Jews to this very day.
16	Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them.	Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go.
17	And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted.	When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted.
18	And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.	Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

20	Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.	and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
