1 |
Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: |
Paul, Silas and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: |
|
2 |
Grace unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. |
Grace and peace to you from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. |
|
3 |
We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth; |
We ought always to thank God for you, brothers, and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love every one of you has for each other is increasing. |
|
4 |
So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure: |
Therefore, among God's churches we boast about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and trials you are enduring. |
|
5 |
Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer: |
All this is evidence that God's judgment is right, and as a result you will be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering. |
|
6 |
Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you; |
God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you |
|
7 |
And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, |
and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels. |
|
8 |
In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: |
He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. |
|
9 |
Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; |
They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the majesty of his power |
|
10 |
When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day. |
on the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed. This includes you, because you believed our testimony to you. |
|
11 |
Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power: |
With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may count you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may fulfill every good purpose of yours and every act prompted by your faith. |
|
12 |
That the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ. |
We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ. |

Note |
1 |
Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, |
Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him, we ask you, brothers, |
|
2 |
That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. |
not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by some prophecy, report or letter supposed to have come from us, saying that the day of the Lord has already come. |
|
3 |
Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; |
Don't let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. |
|
4 |
Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. |
He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God's temple, proclaiming himself to be God. |
|
5 |
Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? |
Don't you remember that when I was with you I used to tell you these things? |
|
6 |
And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time. |
And now you know what is holding him back, so that he may be revealed at the proper time. |
|
7 |
For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. |
For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way. |
|
8 |
And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: |
And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendor of his coming. |
|
9 |
Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, |
The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, |
|
10 |
And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. |
and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. |
|
11 |
And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: |
For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie |
|
12 |
That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. |
and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness. |
|
13 |
But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth: |
But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God chose you to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth. |
|
14 |
Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. |
He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. |
|
15 |
Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle. |
So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter. |
|
16 |
Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace, |
May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, |
|
17 |
Comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work. |
encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word. |

Note |
1 |
Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you: |
Finally, brothers, pray for us that the message of the Lord may spread rapidly and be honored, just as it was with you. |
|
2 |
And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith. |
And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men, for not everyone has faith. |
|
3 |
But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil. |
But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen and protect you from the evil one. |
|
4 |
And we have confidence in the Lord touching you, that ye both do and will do the things which we command you. |
We have confidence in the Lord that you are doing and will continue to do the things we command. |
|
5 |
And the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the patient waiting for Christ. |
May the Lord direct your hearts into God's love and Christ's perseverance. |
|
6 |
Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us. |
In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers, to keep away from every brother who is idle and does not live according to the teaching you received from us. |
|
7 |
For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you; |
For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example. We were not idle when we were with you, |
|
8 |
Neither did we eat any man's bread for nought; but wrought with labour and travail night and day, that we might not be chargeable to any of you: |
nor did we eat anyone's food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you. |
|
9 |
Not because we have not power, but to make ourselves an ensample unto you to follow us. |
We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help, but in order to make ourselves a model for you to follow. |
|
10 |
For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. |
For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: "If a man will not work, he shall not eat." |
|
11 |
For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies. |
We hear that some among you are idle. They are not busy; they are busybodies. |
|
12 |
Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread. |
Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the bread they eat. |
|
13 |
But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing. |
And as for you, brothers, never tire of doing what is right. |
|
14 |
And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed. |
If anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take special note of him. Do not associate with him, in order that he may feel ashamed. |
|
15 |
Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother. |
Yet do not regard him as an enemy, but warn him as a brother. |
|
16 |
Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means. The Lord be with you all. |
Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you. |
|
17 |
The salutation of Paul with mine own hand, which is the token in every epistle: so I write. |
I, Paul, write this greeting in my own hand, which is the distinguishing mark in all my letters. This is how I write. |
|
18 |
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen. |
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. |
