If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly. |

But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate; |
Rather he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined. |

Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers. |
He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it. |

For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision: |
For there are many rebellious people, mere talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision group. |

Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake. |
They must be silenced, because they are ruining whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach--and that for the sake of dishonest gain. |

One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, the Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies. |
Even one of their own prophets has said, "Cretans are always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons." |

This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith; |

They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate. |
They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good. |
